My map apparently doesn't like physics objects

Hi,

As you might have guessed from the title, there seems to be something wrong with my map. It used to be fine, but now there's a weird problem... Basically, it crashes TF2 whenever I fire a grenade or die, so it seems like this is caused by any objects with physics. What's the problem here, and how can I resolve it?

Thanks!

I had this problem, and the cause was that I was using power 4 displacements for the floors.

That's what I'm telling you.

Set them to 3 or 2, and I'll eat my tophat if that doesn't solve the crashes.

Hey, it did! Awesome, thanks.

So what exactly causes this problem? I could've sworn I've used power 4 displacements in maps before and it didn't make them crash... Or is it only for floors that it's a problem? When can you use power 4?

Glad it worked. Tophats tate disgusting, anyway.

To my knowledge, Power Fours are dangerous. It's a physics issue, for sure. Ragdolls and grenades don't know what to do when they hit something with that many faces so close together.

Really, I only know what the problem was, not much more. Sorry :p

Hey, I dunno, I'd imagine they'd be good with pasta...

Anyway, thanks for the help! But if power 4 displacements really are that sucky, why give us the option of using them at all...?

I'm sure they have a use, but what that is, I don't know.

Really, a Power Three is just as effective.

So wait, is it the power of the displacement, or just the density of the points? If you took a power-4 displacement and stretched it, or took a lower-power displacement and shrinked it...?

I'd say density of the points.

I know one guy who had the same problem with his map. The cause why the map crashed was using power 4 displacements under water. He set it to 3 and it solved the problem.

I think it's more than the density of displacement points. If you look at Dustbowl, Valve utilises power 3 with loads of small displacement brushes. Which could just as easily have been fewer, power 4 displacements.

It must be that something is just at odds concerning the power 4 displacements. Since they work in HL2.
