My first task as moderator is to set us up a rotation that will get people to play on the server when it's not a gameday! Now, I could throw a bunch of random maps onto the server and be done with it, but I'd rather have your opinion on it.

I'm leaning on good late-beta/rc/final maps from our community that random people would enjoy playing (that means, maps at a high playable state- no major balance issues, dev textures, or otherwise).

Rotation Draft (in order)
Code:
pl_hoodoo_final
cp_yukon_rc4
pl_waste
cp_furnace_b3
ctf_aurora_rc
tc_meridian_rc2
pl_frontier
cp_steel
pl_cashworks_rc2
cp_glacier_rc

Download the Rotation Pack

Maybe? (if you want them, say so!)
Code:
cp_silvertrail_b3
cp_gydan
arena_lighthouse_rc1/koth_lighthouse_rc3
arena_waste/koth_waste
arena_offblast_b1
pl_stovepipe_b3

Feel free to suggest any maps.

Yes to all, they're all solid

Throw Stovepipe in while you're at it

Also: arena_offblast (latest version)

Can there be a few official maps thrown in there? What I've found is that I like the TF2maps servers better than the pubs I play on. But the thing is I like me some granary, badlands, goldrush, etc in addition to custom maps.

Protip: Everytime cp_broma comes into rotation, everybody on the server runs away. Get rid of it. I beg you.

MUST add Frontier and Cashworks.

People play them where I go all the time.

Halfacre, I see that empty the server a good bit.

My idea is that running the server as 24/7 customs will attract people wanting to play custom maps, so we don't lose half the playercount at a map change from an official to a custom.

Have we investigated the possibility of a flexible rotation, where it plays different maps depending on how many players are actually on the server?

If people like the idea, I will investigate it. Meridian doesn't work too well with a low playercount, which I'm guessing is your concern.

EDIT: Replaced Halfacre with Frontier and added Cashworks

I'm with Shmitz on this one. However, small-population games do suffer a higher rage-quit than large ones, and Meridian is no exception. Since we are effectively starting from scratch, make sure there are a minimum of 2 vanilla maps between each custom. Now then, maps that I insist upon cuz they are awesome-sauce :D Edit 1: arena_waste and cp_silvertrail get my approval. Not so sure about the others.

ctf_colorblind
cp_aqua
cp_gydan
cp_harbor

That would be nice, but that represents a rather small portion of TF2 players. Even I play customs only half the time.

The way I see it is this: we have 874 members of our Steam group. Our server only needs 24. "Jump starting" it isn't a problem. Keeping people playing is. The idea behind the rotation is making it so that people who like to play customs can play the best customs, people who like to play custom maps will find our server and be able to play custom maps, and in the end, we would be able to keep up a playercount. People who play 2fort, Dustbowl, Gold Rush, or Badwater will join for 2fort, Dustbowl, Gold Rush or Badwater, but what's the chance of them sticking around to download Waste, Frontier, or Meridian? While viewing playing custom maps as "black and white" or an "on-off" switch probably isn't the "correct" way and doesn't represent the TF2 player base accurately, it fits.

Most popular servers are 24/7. 24/7 2fort, 24/7 Dustbowl, 24/7 Payload, whatever. We can develop ourselves as the best server for 24/7 custom maps if we try.

Gah, I got cp_broma confused with cp_gydan. I actually don't like broma, but I really like gydan.

edit: and be sure to clear out the huge number of outdated map versions, they kill map votes each time. Also you could find a way of limiting the number of official maps that pop-up in end-of-map votes. Having the occasional official map being voted on seems like it would work instead of having them in rotation. But when we get 4 official maps and 1 custom to choose from, it's too much.

pl_waste is awesome with a low player count. Me and Nova, 1v1 spy duel over the payload!
