I hope that I am not the only person here clued up on displacements -

As you can see I have rather non uniform lighting along the wall that is perpendicular to the displacement. I guess the problem is the lightmap scale and in the dark patches each luxel is mostly covered by the displacement and in the lighter areas each luxel is entirely or nearly entirly visible. Is there a way to get rid of these nasty shadows without increasing the lightmap scale?

Just throwing out random thoughts here but have you tried using the nolight texture? It might change how that looks.

The nolight texture? what does this do? (its obvious from the name that it removes lighting in some way, but its not obvious how or how its used)

Hmmm. I've not run into this problem yet (still mucking around with just basic stuff) but I'm curious to find out if there's a way to deal with it. On the other hand, I just wanted to point out that, at least in this one example from the screenshot, this will be basically unnoticable to the player during gameplay, so I don't think it's worth going too far out of your way to fix. Just my thoughts, though.

I notice it when I play my own and other people maps, it matters. (I try to be as near perfectionist as I can)

Oh, I'm the same way, so I understand, and it may just be something you want to do to make yourself happy. I'm just saying that the vast majority of players probably won't know the difference, so from that point of view, it's something that may be pretty insignificant. Myself, I'm with you, I'll spend a lot of time trying to fix something like that just because it bugs me, even if I know nobody else will see it. Sometimes, however, the fix involves so much work that you're better off just letting it go and trusting that people will notice all the good things about your map and not the fact that you've got an odd shadow on a tiny bit of wall. On the other hand, if it's something that happens repeatedly throughout the map, then it might be more important.

I'm still curious about resolving the issue, though, at any rate, in case I run in to the same thing....

**waits patiently for a suggested fix to appear on the forum**
