Model Chalkboard Doodles

In all my maps so far I've included a little chalkboard doodle by Heavy to sort of leave a little personal mark on all my maps without destroying the whole barrier of the TF2 world. It's based off this old comic I did a while ago with some sloppy crayons doodles made by the Heavy about all of his "teemates". That aside...

In previous maps I would simply just pack the skin into the BSP and have it override the original chalkboard01 skin, but for this map I decided to try and make a duplicate model so I could have all of the skins on one model and be able to use the original chalkboard too. While I was at it I figured I'd put these all out for other mapmakers to use.

Then some smart guys told me a better way to do this and now they're just overlays. Hooray! But if anyone wants just the original models I provided I could still do so.

Included in this:

-Medic chalkboard from ctf_waterhole
-Sniper chalkboard from cp_pike
-Spy chalkboard from the unreleased pl_floodgates
-Mann Co. sign overlay

If one would rather have these chalkboard doodles as a separate model, then look no further than:

this wasnt really needed.

if you place a really thin brush with the texture you like over the chalkboard, you achieve the same effect without having to pack in another model.

same thing as the billboard

I agree with Icarus, small texture changes that can be done with a simple rectangle brush with func_detail is a better solution and it wont give headaches.

You would be better off just make a vmt and vtf

They're all so worried about filesize (for good reason)! But custom materials are always nice. Thanks for this!

No, of course not! That would just be silly to say.

After you guys mentioned this I decided to go into Steel and see how the chalkboard was done there to display the little chalk point markers. What he did was pretty clever--he used the texture for the menu chalkboard, shrunk it to fit within the normal chalkboard model's boundaries and put the overlays up over it.

Since these textures were already created to be reskins for a model, it was far simpler to just do this and fit the overlay to match the the model's normal skin.

And of course, if you so desire you could fit it to the face of a brush too...but since the size of the chalkboard wasn't a power of two or anything that makes it kinda hard. But it works better that way, honestly.

I made a new version of the Medic one for Floodgates. Other than that I usually just do one for every map I make and will probably release them at a similar pace.

Well I hope you create more maps fast :D

I used the two that you made as Props, which is the ones I like better than having to include overlays and stuff in my submission of my clan's intel room contest. Under my submission I said "Did you guys notice the custom chalkboards? They were made by Evang7" and linked to this page :D
