I bet hundreds of people thought up the same idea.

This. It's not really that far-fetched to think a team at Valve would come up with the same idea as this guy, and possibly more people. The 12th post in the thread is some guy saying he had a similar idea. It's a zombie that charges, that's all. It's like complaining about the Soldier because you had an idea about a guy with a rocket launcher way before Valve did.

Indeed. It's not unusual for some guy to think of a new idea at the same time as anyone else on the other side of the planet.

Look at the light Bulb for instance. Two different guys invented it at exactly the same time. One in America, one in England. It just happens that one of them got a contract out of it and the other didn't, so the dude who had his idea baught was the "first" to invent it. *rediculously summarised version*

I feel sorry for him if this is honestly a case in which Valve did take the idea, despite how logical of a resolution to the biggest problem in the game, that this is.

I actually know someone who claims to have received $5 from Valve for an idea to be put in L4D2. It was either the Charger or he wandering witch...

Yeah the thing is everyone thought of this. Even I did, I just never bothered to post it on a forum. Granted his is closer to Valve's than mine, but I still was able to come to the conclusion that something that charges you would end corner camping, as would anyone with half a brainstem.

Yeah, I seriously doubt the L4D developers were carefully watching the Steam forums and picked his out among all the other, well, crap in there, and said it was a brilliant idea. The Charger came about like all the other new stuff- L4D didn't play out how they planned, and it was the solution. And it's not like the name Charger makes it his, what else would they name a special infected that charges players? And a new special infected couldn't just be dropped into a game designed without it in mind. And L4D2 can't be DLC. So the idea goes where it must.

Besides, if he's a boycotter, he gets no respect from me.

Last edited... 4 months into L4D2's development? I think the charger had to already have been in prototype by then considering how polished he is and how much focus has gone into the new infected in PR.

You see, this is why most game companies don't allow their developers to even look at fan ideas, and use community managers to filter input from forums and the like. There are just too many legal issues tied up in using someone else's ideas, with or without intent. Unless, of course, the content is published to public domain, as I've done once or twice...

Of course, Steam's terms of use explicitly state that by posting something on the forums, "you expressly grant Valve the complete and irrevocable right to use, reproduce, modify, create derivative works from, distribute, transmit, broadcast, and otherwise communicate, and publicly display and perform the User Generated Information and derivative works thereof in any form, anywhere, with or without attribution to you, and without any notice or compensation to you of any kind." Which basically means he's SOL for getting any credit to, control of, or compensation for the idea.

When I read the title, I thought of this being in L4D

In said case, I think Dodge/Chrystler would be slightly... angry.

I can't wait for someone to make a model of a charger for the Charger. I'd use it.

So, let me get this straight. The guy is suggesting something to make a game better. He gets his wish, and it is put in a *very* similar game, and so he whines about it? Good lord, just play the game and quit whining.

So on a lighter note, the new vids are making the game look freakin sweet.

edit: also, does anyone really think Valve employees look to their forums for inspiration? Really?

Yes. Maybe they don't take the exact weapons but they do look on the forums to see what people are bitching about. Look at the recent TF2 updates.
