If you saw my latest blog post you know that I am now the proud owner of not one but 2 monitors. So my question is can I set up hammer so say the full 3D view is on one screen and the 2D views are on the other?
Yea, usually it's simply that you would be running one program on one screen and one on another. (or several on one and several on another). The view windows in Hammer are contained within the editor window as a whole.
Perhaps there is a third party mod/plugin that would allow it. But i doubt this is possible.
I wish there was a way to do this because that would be sweet. Until then, I just use a 24" wide monitor. At least it's far better then the days of working on a 17" square monitor. I can see much much more.
If you don't maximize Hammer, you're only able to drag out the size of it so it's the same size as if you maximized it, so I doubt this is possible...Sorry =(

I remember reading a post here from some guy trying to make a replacement for Hammer, but it wasn't very far along. He had a 3D view, maybe you can coax him into creating some sort of app that hooks into Hammer while its running to act as a surrogate 3D window?
Or maybe you can ask Valve and wait 10 years...
