"don't worry about it, digital distribution is a long way off."

GameStop has a business model that might have a shorter half-life than the company's executives would like to admit. The retailer makes the majority of its profits from used games and systems, and from selling high-margin items such as controllers and strategy guides. The large chain has a major question to answer in the next few years: what happens if/when the majority of games are sold online, directly to consumers? So far the answer isn't encouraging: "don't worry about it, digital distribution is a long way off."
These guys must live in a cave.

They're right in one big way.

There is a large percentage of the market that does not trust downloading games for money, as they don't have physical proof of purchase.

And I'm one of those people.
The only time I ever purchase games off Steam is if they are so dirt-cheap from the weekend sales.

Other than that, I like to build on my collection of games.

It's cooler to have a bookcase of game cases, than a screen full of little icons :D

I actually prefer having steam full of games. it's kinda like a visiting card on my college.

"Are you a gamer?", "Why yes, here is my steam account...", * D: at the 10ths of games*

But yeah, that's ignoring the future a bit too much on Gamestop's part...

If someone can make me a small card to fit in my wallet that dynamically updates when I purchase a game from Steam. Then so be it, wouldn't be bad to hand whoever after they see my bookcase. I'm running with...92 Steam games at the moment.

Don't you think he was talking about the console market?

The PC section of gaming stores gets smaller every day. Last I heard they weren't even dealing with used PC games anymore. Gaming stores don't care about the PC, they care about consoles. Full scale digital distribution of bigger budget titles on a console is unlikely anytime soon, if at all. Big developers are going to fight it simply due to piracy concerns.

So... yeah... this guy wasn't talking about steam.

Yeah, my initial reaction to that was to start laughing, but then realised that game stores deal with consoles, and since neither console games or their consoles can be distributed digitally... I don't see any problem.

Well, it is the same store that lets employees "rent" brand new games and take them home to play for a few days, so...

PSPgo says hi.

Although he has a point: outside of PC gaming, digital distribution hasn't really hit the mainstream yet (except for the aforementioned PSPgo).

For example, WiiWare, despite being tied to the biggest selling console in this generation, doesn't generate many sales.

When they were talking about digital distribution they meant for all systems. There still is a large crowd of people that like the feeling of going into a store to get a game. Then there's the casual gaming crowd that see games as coming from the store, not online.

Not to mention, as long as there is a market for used games and consoles, physcial stores will be in big business.
