Help me with having a custom server on srcds

Hello!

I've got a problem.

I've made a map in hammer and I want to try it out with some friends in a dedicated server. I've succeeded to get the map into the map rotation, but after that it all crashes. When I run official maps on a dedicated server there aren't any problems, but now it doesn't even show up on the server list. When it does it has the latency 2000 and it's impossible to join it.

I've googled everything I've come to think of, but there's no solution to find. I've tried following some complex guides on the net, but none of them work.

So now I turn my face towards you. If anyone knows how to run a custom map, you should be the ones, right? Anynone who can waste fifteen minutes of their lives, please add me on msn and give me some live help on how to do to get it up on a dedicated server. My msn is tovilovan@hotmail.com. (I also have an AIM account if you don't use msn...).

Thanks in advance

Does your map have at least one info_observer_point for each team? If not, as soon as someone dies and it tries to put them in a spectator camera it'll crash.

If you're running the dedicated server program from your own home network it won't work. Period.

There's a bug in srcds which makes it unable to resolve your external IP (the IP people connect with) effectively making any server hosted behind a router a LAN-only game. There's no fix for it that I'm aware of, and I've tried a lot of things myself.

Also an additional note...you can't play and host using srcds on the same machine.

Aside from all that, if you aren't behind a router that complicates things. You may want to visit sourceds.com, which is an excellent resource for using the dedicated server app.

Hmm.. Thx Apex!

But something must be wrong... cause I have run and been playing on a srcds server on my own computer, without having a router. But maybe that olnly works for official servers?

Oh well.. Thx anyways ::p:

EDIT: btw sourceds.com is some ad site, and doesn't contain any info about srcds,,,...

Not really, I've run a dedicated server an my home network and friends were able to connect.
Make sure your cvar sv_lan is set to 0 when you start your server. It won't be listed at the Steam server list ( once mine was listed ) but you can give your IP and connection port to your friends and they should be able to connect.
The easiest way is to use a service like no-ip.com so you can assign a DNS address to your dynamic IP like
yourname.no-ip.com. Then give this address to your friends. Some Routers support dynamic DNS provider and keep your IP updated as soon as it changes.
If you use a router make sure the relevant ports are open and forwarded.

I've talked to a few people who have been able to get their locally hosted server working. It's entirely possible Valve are working on it and might have even fixed the IP issue in the engine by now.

Using a DNS service is an excellent idea, and should effectively work around any IP problems. Great find!

Regarding being listed on the master list, a couple people have told me that leaving the server running for about half an hour will eventually get it listed. I have no idea how long it takes a server to propagate to the master list, but generally home servers seem to take awhile.

Whoops...my fault. It's actually srcds.com. Sorry about that.

LOL!

srcds works really good on my machine.. can have both css + tf2 activated and online at the same time using diffrent ip to both of them while playing.. period!

u have 2 ip for 1 server.. 1 LAN and 1 online.. u can also set another ip on your server by adding +ip 123.4...... when u start your server.. if u want to run a LAN game over internet i recomend hamachi.. period again;)

btw i am behind both 2 firewalls, 1 router and ip blocking program.. both servers work good and people can connect both on lan with hamachi or public with steam.. yepp period here aswell -.-

ive setup +30 servers (5 on my local pc:) and i never had any problems..
