I just had a very long and drawn-out conversation with my father about the general state of stuff. He pointed me to this article, which is a bit more gloom and doom than I usually subscribe to. Regardless, it's an interesting read. The similarities between right now and the years leading up to the Great Depression are startling. And for those who are so inclined; right now he is short stocks and a few bonds in all industries. That means selling now, and buying later at a lower price, thus making a profit. I personally am going long in gold, kindof. Three 2.8 ounce solid gold coins I got for my birthday last year. Hanging on to those babies for a long time. Again, this article is more doomsday that I generally accept, but it's just plausible enough to warrant a read. http://www.investorsinsight.com/otb_va_print.aspx?EditionID=651

There is at least one major factor that separates this time from the Great Depression - FDIC insured banks.
