Hmm myself, i wish there is a mixed option.

as a community - Yes.
as a tf2mapping community - maybe not.

A lot of time in chat whats great is peopel can look at the answers or scroll up when away.
You miss this in a voice chat. Also people can talk in game for testing.

I don't know. I have very limited experience with voice chatting...
How about a test run, if it's used and appriciated we keep it? Or is it a "either we get one or we don't, no turning back" situation? :p

Well we have a voice server now, teamspeak.

Ventrilo would offer us a larger server and much better quality.

its nothing permanent. we can definitely try it for a month or so and see how it goes.

Ventrilo > 9000 > Teamspeak > 0 > TF2's ingame chat

Quite seriously. Ventrilo has a much cleaner interface, much higher voice quality and what not. Now let us weigh the pros and cons.

Pros:
High qulaity sound, people don't sound like 30's radios.
Clean interface
Ability to manage people with different channels
Talking is much easier to do then typing, and you can say much more in less time.
You can talk to everyone in vent about the map your testing, and you can turn alltalk off ingame.

Cons:
Sound goes away, text doesn't

BUT.... Ventrilo does have a chat in it and you post text and links in you vent comments.

Personally I say ventrilo wins. If you want to try ventrilo out I offer you guys my vent server. We can do a little trial period in that.

IP: vent13.gameservers.com
Port: 4203

Considering ventrilo is broken for me, It would not benefit me whatsoever

Plus vent gets all spammy once you get too many people on.

We already have all talk and the chat room - more than enough

But alltalk sucks. And you have multiple channels. TF2's ingame Voip's quality is ass.

And why is your vent broken?

What about Mumble? Though I personally haven't used it I do seem to here a lot of people praising it.

for whatever reason whenever I have vent and TF2 open at once, always ONE of them plays loud static when I talk.

Originally I voted no, because I honestly don't think we need one. But I suppose it could be handy for actually talking about the map while in the server, so that we don't need to rely on voice chat in game. Such as what happened today, when one certain person wouldn't shut up and for the first 3 maps the mappers couldn't get any useful feedback. I'd have it password protected though, maybe just post it in the VIP lounge so plenty of people have access to it, but it isn't publicly viewable. People would be free to distribute the password to anyone they want of course, within reason.

As far as just hanging out in it and chatting, I really don't think we should do that, because so many new mappers come to the actual steam chat room looking for help, it would be silly for everyone to migrate from there to the Vent server.

Yeah making privet rooms would benefit a lot, and also about those people that would be going on for help, there could be a separate channel just for that and put it in the rules that your not supposed to go up to the "general" channel and ask for help, just wait in the "need help" channel, something like that.

My self, I love ventrilo, been using it for years, it's always nice to just talk to people you know through forums or games and get to really know the person.

Ahh well, I voted yes.

Say we got a Ventrilo server for in-game chatting... but I didn't bother downloading the program because I don't talk on the mic. Would I be completely left out of all conversations going on during gamedays?

I assume I would, so I voted no. I think the ingame chat is ok. I don't see what more you'd want; you can talk, others can hear you, no need to install and run other stuff. Isn't that good enough?

EDIT: Also, I'm very negative towards more or less migrating from the Steam chat to a Vent server, because - again - I don't use a mic. I have a feeling the chatroom would get pretty lonely.

The reason I request a sourceTV demo from my gamedays is to see the game flow and playback the situation where people go "oh man, this window prop is floating" (where??!?!). But I also use it to save all the feedback from the voice chat. And if the map feedback migrates to another place I'm going to request to get recording of that too...

I'd have to agree with everyone's points against it.

1. Moving out of the steam chat and in-game chat alienates people without mics
2. Moving out of the steam chat alienates new members looking for help
3. Alltalk in game works quite fine
4. Who truly cares about sound quality? We're looking for map feedback, not recording an opera

I wanted to bump this up, we were talking in chat today. A vent server could be useful. I think though, impractical. We stick to what we have for gamedays using ingame chat. Although, we could use IRC for out of game, over the steam chatroom. You can connect via a java client, or mIRC or Chatzilla for Firefox. There isn't "ghost chatting" you can scroll up to find anything you missed. And we dont have to deal with steam going down, or anything like that.

I'd enjoy having an IRC or a vent server. IRC would be best for our needs though.

Steam is pretty stable these days. Plus all the other points still hold true. Although no one seems to actually listen to me in ingame chat. Whether my mic works or not is completely eratic..

We've done alright without it and i can't see the benefits outweighing confusing people with any more third party programs used to communicate with each other. Keeping people confined to steam and ingame chat for testing works exactly how desired.

Plus IRC is horrible.

Ventrillo is good as its easy to setup and access.

EDIT: I am for it because it is more convient for me personally, when I am in sdk, as I would't have to minimize the window and type out a big long message for help etc...
