Water makes hammer editor freak out but works fine in-game

I'm making a basic map for testing, and I make some water. I have a complete skybox without leaks, I have a fully enclosed area for the water (also with no leaks). I make the no-draw box which works fine. I open the texture application tool, and the instant I apply water to the top of my water box, my skybox freaks out and has this huge white artifact that moves around and looks awful. Erasing the water makes it go away, and remaking the water makes it happen again.

I have tried:

-remaking the sky box
-remaking the water enclosure
-remaking the water itself

All result in the same thing. It doesn't happen on all my maps, I have made water before with the same method.

After deciding I didn't know how to fix it, I went ahead and compiled and loaded the map. No compile errors, and it works just fine in the game.

What the hell? =/

Maybe save the .vmf as a new iteration, and try again.

Also, make sure you're using TF2 textures and materials.

...could be a setting in your 3d view options. Try dropping the far Z clip, and dropping the model view distance.

Ok, after more experimenting, it ONLY happens on dev_water3, dev_water4, and dev_water5.

I've used those textures before, this is SO WEIRD.

yes it is the only water texture on the map =/

I don't know exactly what the problem with your map is (you didn't post a screenshot) but: Just switch to a TF2 water material and you should be fine. You're not supposed to use those dev_waters for TF2 anyway - they don't fit the style of the game.

ohhh ok, I did not know this.... (newbie)

Is there a good list of TF2 textures in general or water textures?

in the texture browser enter

filter: water
game: tf

That will bring up all the water textures for TF2.
