for some reason i cant change the size of overlays. whether i click and drag it, or scale it using "transform", it always crops the overlay instead of resizing it.

Make sure you have 'texture lock' active, it can be found in the top toolbar marked 'tl'

Scaling texture lock does just what its name says locks the texture while scaling :). And having tl active or not is really dependant on the person. Its alot easier to align textures with it turned off though.

this can be caused by the overlay covering a seam between 2 brushes, showing on one brush and not the other. go into the overlay properties, click on brush faces, then click the pick button on the right, the original face should appear in red, hold ctrl and click the other face, then apply. should appear on both faces then.

Cheers for that Artesia, I was always wondering how to make an overlay go over two brushes.

Lol Artesia, did you even read what the guy said? That's not what's happening. Ravidge answered his question correctly. Although someone happened to find that useful.

um, I did read it, but the picture looked like the other problem to me, so I tried to help. If you don't want me to try to help people just let me know and I can stop posting

Artesia, don't know if your post helped the original poster, but it gave me ideas on why I've had problems with overlays in the past, and how to cure those problems. Thank you.

When I read that I thought "That's a handy bit of knowledge. Maybe this Artisia should do up a tutorial on dealing with overlay problems?" 'Cause I'd like to be able to find that info next time an overlay is acting wacky on me.

If you encounter a problem you should go to the VDC before anything, If that doesnt help, you post here (or search for more solutions, you will learn better if you try to figure stuff out yourself).

For example: http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Info_overlay
Tells the reader it can be resized and that it can be applied to multiple brushes (and how), but It doesn't say anything about the OPs problem involving texture lock.

Handy bit of knowledge: The VDC page opens automatically if you press F1 while in hammer.

I'm just guessing but:

That has nothing to do with brush faces I believe. When you compile the map it will start cutting up things in interesting ways and those are also called faces. if you have a lot of world geometry connected to eachother they will make something like this:
SS-2009.06.06-22.02.01.png

And I think your problem is that your overlay is touching too many of these small triangles at once.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Could someone enlighten me on why exactly does this happen? Why all the slicing and dicing?

I believe its because of how the engine compiles the world geometry, for instance if one of those boxes was sitting on the red brush, and you went in game and noclipped, the orange box would no longer have a bottom, it was removed because it was touching the red brush. likewise a hole is placed in the red brush where the orange box was, and is then sliced accordingly. Yet another reason to use func_detail

This thread is really old but I have a problem when I try to edit my overlays. Every time I move or rotate an overlay, it makes "angles" in the overlay's properties show up in red, and will not show up ingame, if I resize it in the camera window it still works though. I have not found a solution to this problem anywhere else or any other similar problems.
