Questions about converting a HL2 map to TF2

I've been playing a lot of TF2, so I was thinking of making a map. I can't play too long before the urge to map becomes overwhelming. Anyway, I made a HL2 map about a year ago and never got around to publishing it.

So, Just for grins, I opened it in Hammer for TF2 and all of my textures and objects are still there!

I've been mapping for quite a while and this isn't how it goes when you are working in different games. You're lucky if the map file can be converted to the new game and the odds of all of my texs having the same names in TF2 and HL2 seem pretty slim too me and the odds of the same thing happening with the models seems just as slim.

So my long drawn out question is... why?

I have "Orange Box" and installed everything. Is this my issue? Does Hammer allow me to use every texture in steams lib?

So to check this, I installed just TF2 on another machine and loaded my map with zero problems. This still seems suspect to me...

I don't want to mix assets. I'd like my game to be playable by anyone with just TF2 installed.

Can anyone point me in the right direction or help ease my fears.

Cheers,
J.Sera

My guess....

(I hope Im not way off here)
TF2 is built off the source2 engine which is what HL2 episode 1 and 2 are using. When you install TF2 you are installing the HL2 stuff as well. Since the source2 engine can work with the source(1) materials and entities, they are accessible for mapping when hammer is set up for TF2. Doesnt mean you should use of the HL2 stuff, but the option is there. You are smart by using TF2 only props and materials. It will keep your file size down and keep everything looking like TF2 (stylized) the HL2 stuff is too realistic.

I know that's part of the answer anyway....

One thing I wanna point out from my own experiences trying to use a DoDS map for TF2 is : TF2 requires alot more elbow room than other hl2 mods. If you plan using all the brush work from an HL2 map, be prepared to resize everything (doorways, halls, windows etc) to better accommodate the TF2 player model.

That's what I was thinking as well. But, when I installed just TF2 on my other machine, I only copied the BSP across. Wouldn't the tex etc not display if that was the case?

Yeah I've had to tweak all the doors and what not. It's definitely a bit tighter and maybe too tight.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Can anyone tell me how to specify only TF2 assets?

filter 'tf' in the model/texture viewer.
