Question about uploading maps

I had a question about uploading maps. I put my map offsite and created a new thread in the "maps" forum with a link. Right now it just points to the .bsp. Is it more standard to upload the .vmt as well, or a .zip file containing both? If there's instructions somewhere for what to do in that regard, I missed them.

I did find the "how to post a new map" thread in the maps forum, and I think I followed those directions correctly. I also just noticed the "upload" functionality, which I'll use next time I upload something.

Thanks for all the help.. I'd have given up on trying to get anything done well before now without this site.

generally speaking you should not upload the vmt (though the map file is actually a vmf)

the most common way to upload is to zip the bsp, alone in the zip file as this reduces the file size though some mappers add a txt file to explain their map as well

i just read this and it looks kinda confusing...so...summary
do not upload the vmf, zip the bsp then upload that

optional: instead of a zip you can use a bz2, this is what servers use so it may be more convenient, the program 7-zip can compress to bz2s

Another note:

Once you do upload..if you go here: http://forums.tf2maps.net/downloads.php?do=add&cat=

and click "My Files" you can edit your upload with the new version. There's rarely a reason to upload a new version as a new upload...because then you're just bloating the DL section with old versions of your map you don't really want people playing anyway
