How do I use BZ2 files?

Is there something I'm missing here?

I know how to make them (at least, I think I do, haven't tried yet), but when I download one from the site in anticipation of gameday, I get a "Missing map" error, and it won't download the bsp, even though I have that option enabled. I ultimately have to delete it and download it direct for the server, which is slow and I can't imagine very good for the overall connection. So am I supposed to unzip it somehow, or has some setting gone horribly wrong?

You need something like 7-zip to extract the .bsp from it. then put that in your maps folders.

Server admins (Grimgriz thats you!) complain at mappers for not using .bz2 as a standard when they upload their maps, but I'm against it because the average joe doesn't know what the hell it is or how to extract it, so you'll always find maps by me uploaded as .bsp files inside a standard .zip archive, nice and easy to open.

I really like the people that include a bz2 in with the zip/rar. Trust me, server owners really appreciate not having to compress your map into a usable format.

and I find it a ridiculous waste of bandwidth to include the same data twice in a file, and usually annoys the heck out of me when I see it.

.bsp is a usable format isn't it? So why would you need a .bz2 if everyone can download and play a .bsp? The only reason I could see is because of the filesize difference. But for the confusion it causes to a lot of people seems like not a good trade off.

Thats my point, but for any server admin they need to compress it into the .bz2 format as well as having the .bsp so they can put it on their redirect for faster downloads.

Because compressing a bsp can reduce the size down to 1/2 ~ 1/3 of normal, saving people time and bandwidth (which = money). Bz2 because it's the format valve made the game know how to automatically decompress into the right place after being downloaded in-game.

I would agree with you, but I'm much more annoyed by having to bz2 something before I upload it to the redirect.

And do you not thing the average player is not equally annoyed by having to open a program to extract the map rather than being able to open it like it were a normal folder (ie .zip with a .bsp inside)

Hmm, seems like there are very valid points getting thrown around here. I don't think that there is going to be a conclusion to this topic BUT it is still fun to debate nonetheless. So I have some to see that .bz2 is good for bandwidth and download times only, but is more annoying due to the fact of trying to extract and compress and figure out how to extract it if you don't know what it is.

Everyone on this website should know what a .bz2 file is and how to use it. And EVERYONE downloading from the website should be reading the description, which should ALWAYS include instructions how to use the file they're downloading. If neither occur then one of the two parties involved is simply being lazy.

bz2 is necessary for running a faster download server. Otherwise everyone would complain about downloading 40 MBs of data and joining the map 2-4 minutes late.

I think you should just include the bsp when you upload it. i mean most of the people who are downloading it aren't uploading to the redirect are they?

oh my god, 2 minutes late? :crying::crying::crying::crying::crying:

I usually miss the whole round when I'm forced to download a custom map

You should hope that the people DLing your map here are server owners uploading it to a redirect :)
