Texture rips?

First post :p

Anyways, I'm not sure if it's the correct term or not in the topic title, but this is a common problem I've noticed when I map. Areas in the dark seem to have lines, in a way it looks like the textures ripping to me. In the light or right up close they seem to disappear. I'm not sure what's causing it.

A picture for reference.

I've also noticed, as you can see in the screen shot, spots of light appear on the walls too.

Even when I put lights in, you can still see it in the distance in the darker areas. It doesn't happen in any of the default maps or other custom maps, it only seems to happen when I'm mapping so I figure I'm doing something wrong.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Edit: Here's a picture with light in the room. http://i40.tinypic.com/2aj2555.jpg

is the floor / ground outside a displacement?

Nope.

Though I DID fix it in a way. I made the map a night map (which actually makes my map look much better) and I'm not having the problem anymore. Though I will still need a fix should I make a day map.

I call them hairline fractures

I really wish I could help you, but I have the same problem sometimes, usually when I put any type of invisible wall in front of any type of wall, and don't feel too bad! I notice them in a lot of Valve maps.

I'm getting these "hairline fractures" now. They didn't show up on my older NVidia card, but when I got an ATI card, I started seeing them all over the place.

To think of it, I never did "notice" them on my 8600, but ever since I got a 9600 I have been noticing them all over. Coincidence? I think not!

I have them too, and sough for a while the reason behind them and concluded it was linked to higher resolution. Somehow, some triangle brush are not edged perfectly and show this kind of background light, especially noticeable in dark/monotone areas. Only fix I've found is to lit the areas, and avoid long plane surfaces made of multiple triangles.

I also have these small "gaps" in official valve maps, but they're really annoying anyway. They showed up couple of months ago, but the only thing I might have changed is my driver for my nvidia gt 8800.

It's a driver (and hardware) issue, and usually results from rounding errors due to the inaccuracy of the floating point calculations used. Ironically the problem is usually more visible if you have AA on.
