Wow i am completely lost :( I am trying to add fire to the top of my torches with ZERO luck. I have tried doing searches here on the forums and about all i can come up with is a link to a d/l file that is suppose to have the working version in it. Problem is when i download it the file is corrupted:(

I read somewhere that dev_fire worked? But i cannot get it to work for me no matter how many times i re read the directions :(

help please.

Thanks in advance

Okay, what you going to want to do it center a env_sprite on the torch top.
After that change the following to:

Render FX: Constant Glow
Render Mode: Additive
FX Amount: Whatever seems necessary(I used 150)
FX Color: Whatever color you want your flame
Framerate: 10-15
Sprite Name: light_glow03.vmt
Scale: Whatever look best on top of the torch
Size of Glow Proxy Geometry: 30ish or whatever you find fits best

If you didn't see it on the list leave it as default and you'll have a nice looking flame on top of your torch. ;)

did you compile? the flame only shows up when you compile... otherwise it looks like a grey cube.
just throw a cordon around it and compile the area with the flame

Cordon is the area that is highlighted in red. Basically this is what you'd want to do:
  1. Click the one on the left
  2. Then click the one on the right
  3. Then make a box around the area that you want to compile
  4. Make sure you look at every grid to make sure it's correct
  5. Compile the map
  6. BAM! Only the area in the cordon box is compiled!

Here is a .vmf I made to show you the flame and everything.
Go ahead and compile it if you wish.

Sweet, if I were you though, I would turn down the spotlights a little bit since it's so bright in there. The bright orange on the wall looks a little outta place.

Whichever light is being casted onto the wall... not sure if it's the actual light entity or the spot_light entity

i made some tweaks to the light settings and it looks a lot better now, the "glow" now looks more realistic. I have to decrease the light settings on the spot lights , basically make the room a bit darker and all looks good now. Thanks again for the help sir!
