Airship

I'm working on an arena level where each team starts off on their respective airship next to a mountain. There is a mine between the two airships, but a central CP is visible from the outside of the map.

I'm trying to push the detailing in the skybox, as I want clouds to be moving below. Playing around with rotating brushes might eventually lead me to create an arena mode where two airships are battling right next to each other, if I can get the skybox to look like a landscape moving below. Anyone have ideas?

if you cant get it to work in the skybox, put it in the playable section. Just wouldnt be able to make it look really far away.

to me, the red airship looks really weird.

You should make the layout of both airship the same otherwise one team might have the advantage.

Consider using displacements to create the ballon part of the ships You can achieve very smooth results with low performance impact.
The clouds should be indeed into the skybox, you can use several parallel sheets of func_brushes covered with your texture, each with slightly different moving parameters to create a parralax feeling. If you want to add some solid parts to the moving terrain, it would get more complicated.

That's a really cool idea! Using displacements seems like a good approach, but I think using custom props along with world brushes might get the job done the best. That is if you have access and can make custom props... It really will open up a whole new dimension to making maps.

Don't make just floating ground, it looks really bad. Just make it like the top of a mountain with clouds right below so people just assume it goes to the ground.
