Hey all,

This is my first time designing levels for computer games, but I have done level design for tabletop and I have done some programming in Flash, so the unification of the two is good. I like all maps that are NOT orange, or some other color and I like all classes and try to pick based on what my team's layout is, balance is key usually... though I'll admit that I'm not so good with the sniper and both snipers and demomen can really tick me off.

This community is great and between this site and other things scoured off the web I have been able to solve a lot of my own problems, but I now have my first head scratcher.

I did the tutorial off the Valve Developer Community and that was fine, started messing around in a new map, and things were fine still. I am now serious and designed my first map layout, paper first, and currently the dreaded orange block, but for some reason my spawn points "are not clear" and they spawn you about 128 or so down and this causes me to be spawned below my map. I have been looking at the previous tutorial and mess around map but cannot solve my own problem.

Why would my spawns be clear in the first two "maps" and not clear in my first real map?

Thank you very much, and I hope to have something worth looking at soon.

O, and before I run off again, is their a list of these super common mistakes? I find a lot of how to do certain things, but not so much of the little dumb things like spawn above the floor and the ctrl click for applying textures to one side of the surface; when i found this i was very happy.

the 2nd problem I am having is that I have made nuclear silos out of four cylinders stacked, the base being wider then the top, the 2nd is the same, then a straight vertical cylinder, and then a cylinder on top with the base small then the top. I line up the points, but everytime i close and come back it corkscrews leaving little ledges where a demo or soldier could perch on, why do my points move and is their a way to solve this? thank you again

You can try here: http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=3050 along with other stickies in the mapping discussion board.

Also, your cylinders probably have invalid faces and are getting "fixed" when you reload. I'm guessing you mean a cooling tower for a nuclear power plant, in which case it would be best done with displacements and subdivision. It's trickier to learn but does exactly what is needed for that shape.

bah, i looked over that list when I signed up but didn't go back to it, excuse me.

I have been reading into displacement since I sort of figured that was what I would need to do, thank you once more
