How Many Maps Do You Work On At Once?

I was just wondering how many mapping projects at a time you guys tend to manage. When I mapped for Goldsrc I would often attempt as many as 3 at a time, often to no completion of any one of them.

I'm trying desperately to stay on task with a single concept of a TF2 map and see it through to the end, but it's hard to do when looking at a single WIP thread on this forum just fills my head with ideas for other maps.

I've noticed some people such as Youme and NovaSilisko who seem to be ridiculously good at releasing presentable, playable versions of maps within a few months or sometimes even weeks of one another. Sometimes I think I'm trying TOO HARD to organize a map and stick to it, although the past shows that if I don't try hard enough, it never gets done.

I have as many as I want worked on at one time basically.

Right now I think I have 5? One which I am really working on, the other 4 so that chrono will stop pestering me.

Well, desperation is my first...and it's "on hold" until I learn more.
Dustribute was my second, and then I started botg. People had fun while playtesting botg, so I decided to put dustribute on hold until I get to beta 1 of botg...and have since focused on that (and server nonsense).

I have two secret projects being worked on (one to be revealed soon), and two other maps plan waiting for the first two to be far enough along that they don't require as much time.

I guess it's good to alternate projects so one doesn't get bored, but I find it really hard to stay motivated with two. One eventually becomes more favorable to me (for the better part of about a week), just in time for me to get bored with that and start another sideproject, which soon takes grip, etc.

Hard part is going back to a backburner project rather than starting a new one.

I find it best to have a very, very detailed idea of your map on mapper so you don't have mappers block and you don't get bored of it. For the map I'm currently doing I had a perfect plan, but due to it being my first hammer map I made it too small, so I'm making a whole new section to the map.

pl_halfacre is on the back burner, since its very near completion, cp_furnace is the main project and when I'm bored of doing displacments on that I work on the A/D map. So you could say three but I'm only really actively working on two of them.

most i've had would be 4. but that's cos i start working on a new map when i have mapping time and the maps i'm already doing are waiting testing or similar.

also, i guess low attention span plays a part. i like the change in scene, instead of constantly looking at the same map over and over.

I'm working on two "real maps", three if you count the intel room for the contest.

It's really ironic for me because I'm actually pretty GOOD at mapping. I've aborted so many projects that I probably know the entity work and detailing concepts better than some of the people who came up with the perfect map idea on their first try and finished it. I'm going to kick it up to two projects at once though and see if that helps me out...

As I said before, I'm one of the more "visual" types when it comes to a map. Rather than coming up with a gameplay idea then designing the environment I like to design an environment that has its various unique characteristics and then tool it to work with a gameplay mode. As a result, sometimes the only excuse I need for dropping a project and starting another one is seeing someone else's map and thinking "it looks nice". :bored:
