Hey folks; just thought I'd introduce myself. My names Phill and I do level design work for a living (and a little bit of a hobby).

My specialty is kismet scripting for U3, but I figured I'd give the hammer editor a whirl and see what all the fuss was about.

I'll be posting a cp map in the not to distant future for feedback/ critiques ect ect. I'd like to get involved with the TF2 community so feel free to ask me any questions about level design or general game industry questions.

We're all here to help right?

:p

Welcome abroad!

How much of a pipe dream is it to think that if we rock enough at doing this as a hobby we'll be discovered and hired? ;)

hmmm..good question. IMHO its probably not very likely that you would get a job as a direct result of making maps like this, but starting out is hard without experience.

Making maps like this in your spare time is great experience. It shows you can see an idea through from high concept to final polish. Plus there's the whole networking side of things; which is a surprisingly large part of getting a job making games.

Well nice to meet you.

Well, quick question, what exaclty is level desing? Do you make the maps in the program, or do you do the whole concept and art direction of the map?

Level designers typically just do the gameplay side of things. Like setting up scripted moments and building the basic structure of a map. Then the artist will come in and pretty it all up. :D

Though there are plenty of studios that have level designers do both the art and gameplay for a map.

Most level designers are required to write and keep a level design doc along with a map calling out dependencies from other departments (animation, audio, world art ect ect).
