I looked at some valve maps, Badlands in particular and noticed a lot of these. However, the dev wiki said these brushes are obsolete, replaced by func_brush, so why does valve use these?

Thanks.

They aren't really obsolete... func_brush can do everything an illusionary can, but it also does a lot more and is variable. If all you want is a non-solid brush that never changes, illusionary works fine (and don't quote me on it, but it might have a smaller overhead because it can do less).

I'm still trying to figure out the usage of them. They are all over the main bases in badlands and IIRC they are in the door ways in the middle of well.

Maybe Valve uses func_illusionary for organization purposes. Brushes that are never solid could be func_illusionary and ones with togglable solidity throughout the course of the game could be func_brush.

One thing I've seen them do is use an illusionary set to Dont Render with one face a white texlight. this provides soft ambient glow in a given direction while the object is niether visible nor interactive.
