CTF_well, what do you think?

Personally i think its a bit poor and a complete waste of 30 minutes from valve. I mean come on it really only took them, what, 1 day to make.

Meh, the real question is how it plays and I havent been able to evaluate that yet. What I would note however, after running through it very quickly, it still says "Capture Zone" in the middle of the trainyard where the 3rd point used to be.

Oh and also did they really remove the trains from the middle section? While Im not sure whether that is a good or a bad thing, seems like an odd omission, wonder what their reasoning might have been.

Trains have been omitted, yes.

This seems to be a pretty hackneyed attempt to add another CTF map. It's FAR too large and open for the CTF playstyle. I spent most of my time just running to the battle instead of actually participating. The static spawn points, in combination with the different objective, make the normal contention points of the map unimportant. With the CP version you knew where the lines of contention were when you approached them. In CTF you can run into the battle before you realize it. When playing CTF Well I simply felt like I was playing on a map that was made for a different purpose.

Played it for about a half-hour earlier today, and wasn't that impressed. Like others have said, feels way too open for the most part. Will give it a some more playtime tomorrow to see if it grows on me...

Boo! Lame.

What's next? CTF_Granary? TC_2Fort?

I'm sure we'll get used to playing on it eventually but the principle of the fact that they couldn't give us a new map and just reworked an already existing map (which I never really cared for in the first place) is just lame and a bit insulting. There are people here and elsewhere making custom maps that rival Valve's and do it without a paycheck to motivate them, just the love of the game and the mapping process. Don't get me wrong, I have agreat respect for Valve and the majority of their maps, but it'd be nice if some love was shown to the fans.

Maybe there is hope for my CTF_badlands yet?

If Valve's repurposing of Badlands turns out the same way it did for Well, then your Badlands will likely be more popular than the official one. Heck, it's already fairly popular on my server and it's only a 20-slot max.

As for Well's new, uh, re-badging...it's too long. It seems like they took the old layout to the rack and stretched it beyond its breaking point. The center building was an excellent capture point area but it's barren wasteland now, serving simply as an avenue you happen to pass through to get from your base to the enemy one. Since there's nothing there worthy of notice or any real reason to hang around, the sewer routes are more or less useless as well, since their main use would've been as a secondary route underneath the enemy-held or contested point. The middle building also tosses out the sniper battles usually present on the remakes of Well, so snipers are cast into a very static and defensive role.

In short, not a big fan. Wasn't before, won't be now. Come on Valve, give us some real CTF maps willya?

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm not too upset about it. After all, it's an additional map on top of the two they're promising us soon. But I'll try it eventually. Who knows, I may be pretty irritated with it.

Valve's ctf_well -- a rush job?

I played ctf_well for a short while last night, and to be honest I'm unimpressed. It looks and feels like a fairly rushed conversion; here's why:

  1. Intel on a trolley under the rocket - just seems lame.
  2. Water exits from base are pretty useless -- it should've been an entrance only.
  3. The whole central building serves no purpose anymore, particularly its upper levels.
  4. Notice the "Capture Zone" decals still there where the central CP used to be.
I do like the extra stairs to the sniper battlement, but the map just doesn't seem to have had the attention it needed to make it a great conversion. I imagine I'll be favouring well_classic or well2 over this one.

I think ctf is not for tf2 but i think this map is better then 2fort.
And i am glad they redone old well because it would be sad if they put much time in a play type that a lot of players don't like.
They said something about this in the dev comments.

I played it earlier, and it was the same map but felt very different. Not good different.

One team has to either really stupid or be dominating pretty hard in order for people to actually get and capt he intel. Everyone basically uses shotguns because its so open, until u get close enough for your primary gun. Then if you get close enough to the enemys buidling, they usually stack it with turrets so you have to stack up on medics or spies to have a chance.

The time i played the map took forever to finish and its a marathon to get to the action, which the other team has re spawned and setup defense before u get there.

Not at all. I played it for several hours today, and was enjoying it. Having a second official CTF map is great! But it does have flaws, and some of them are quite obvious and annoying.
