So, just for fun today I tried to carve a block into a cylinder and what I saw shocked me. No, no useless minibrushes. No, no hammer crashes. I saw... A usefull tool. Yeah, carving a block into a cylinder is nothing big but it's something you might need sometime.

Okay, let me just show some screenshot proof.

The carve thing I did. Well, I guess that's how you want that to look!

Now, what's wrong with the carve tool? :p

You're not showing the whole picture.

Everyone knows that a baby kitten dies each time you use the carve tool. Now that pic might look pretty but what if you took the same screen with a dead bloody kitten in it, not so pretty anymore huh?

It doesn't look bad though. The reason being is you used a simple cube that was grid snapped. The extra verts on that cylinder might not snap to grid correctly when you compile though. Look at it in game to see the real results. It may or may not get worse.

And you could do the same with the clip too without one bit of fear.

The Carve tool can do some useful stuff if used responsibly, but it's not really worth it when one can replicate the result using clipping and/or vertex editing with a much lower chance of Hammer crashing or the VIS compiler exploding.

I'm still waiting for a way we can overlay brushes' textures in the 2D views - it'd make clipping out window frames and stuff from flat brushes so much easier.

Ok, now try carving a block with a cylinder. Or rather, try carving with any other shape besides a block. THAT's what kills baby kittens.
