I need a small favour from a modeller

Hey guys. I wonder if someone who knows how to model, can turn this into a prop for me: http://i44.tinypic.com/2vxmuqg.jpg

I'll provide the textures and dimensions. I would do it myself - in fact, I'm thinking of starting to learn XSI soon - but I fear it will take me a lot of time to learn modelling enough to do that without screwing something up, as I know it's common to make mistakes when you start mapping for example.

I'm willing to return the favour, though I don't know how - I can do textures pretty well, I'm not sure what else I can give back.

The reason I want it as a prop, is that I have quite a lot of these in my map, and they're currently brushes - not exactly the epitome of optimization :) And it looks a bit ugly as a brush, not to mention it's a hell to align the texture on the top cone properly. Also, Hammer deletes parts of them whenever I load my map for some reason - even though they're completely valid brushes and compile properly.

Also, from what I understand, making this prop into one of a different size is a matter of changing the scale in a text file and recompiling, right?

I hope this doesn't come out as too annoying of a request, I really didn't know who to turn to.

Because I want the snow on the tops :) Plus the stock ones come in just one size, and like I said, I need to be able to change it myself.

You can modify the original texture , and just decompiling/recompiling can be used to make multiple sizes... (with $scale in the qc)

You can do it reeskining and recompiling it, which doesn't need modeling.

nvm, zeewier replied before

Thank you guys, I'll look into that. I hope reskinning won't be much of an issue, considering the whole pine tree (Valve's, that is) uses one uniform texture, while I'll need it to have a unique part, but we'll see what happens.

Any pointers about where I should start with the decompiling and reskinning? I'm looking at the dev wiki, but I can't seem to find anything exactly useful.

Another idea is to use the stock evergreen trees and lay a displacement over it, shaped like snow, and textured like snow. This would be easy enough to do.

Also you mentioned "changing" the size of models yourself. Even with custom models you can't resize them in Hammer. You would have to redo the model itself.

Also, fpsbanana has a helpwanted section where you can post a want ad for a modeler or whatever: http://www.fpsbanana.com/studios/helpwanted

Termaximus, thanks for the heads up. I know you can't resize models in Hammer - that's why I asked if the process is as simple as changing the scale in the qc and recompiling :) My idea was to have 3-4 different sizes to use in various spots around my level.

The idea with the displacement sounds sweet though, I'll give it a try.

Not a problem, and sorry to point out the obvious.

Let me know how the displacement snow idea works out and be sure to post some screen shots if it does.
