What was your first non-test map that you played with your friends or something?

My was a Counter-Strike 1.6 map.
I couldn't get any picture as it was on one of my old computers that had an hard drive crash multiple times.

But here is a layout of it.

If image refuses to load, blame imageshack

(Also the black bars in the shallow water is like walls. Not some water-ish effect)

My first map I claim a WC3 map called Footmen of the Ancients....a cross between a super popular map called DOTA (defenders of the ancients iirc) and the many many footman maps...where basically you send an arseload of troops that you can upgrade at your enemy. Here it is if anyone want's to check it out.

My first FPS map was/is desperation, which you can find in it's WIP thread here:

cp_closecombat for TF2

It was essentially a room with 2 spawns either end, and 3 control points next to each other.

I've still never released a map (well I've done some example maps and prefabs). But I've done some that never saw the light

When I was really young, I loved drawing little bird's eye view infiltration shooters on paper lol.

Then, I learned how to make flash, and started making really long FPS rail shooters.

I got more experience with triggers and such with making campaigns for Starcraft and Warcraft.

I got my first experience making real FPS maps with Duke Nukem 3D's Build world editor.

My first actual released map was Observatory. Still fresh in everyone's minds I think.

First map that I made which I played together with others (as in, not alone on a LAN server) was a quite unremarkable ctf map for TFC.
Not much to say really, It had a lot of flaws like some rooms beeing too small and others were huge, colored lights and instakill traps. I remember I had a cannon that spewed gibs all over the place.. that was awesome :)

This was probably 8 or 9 years ago. A time of making football and icehockey maps, lots of lasers and rotating platforms.. holy shit, those were some crazy times.

Best gimmick map I made was a CS map, looking lika underground parkinghouse, there were no buyzones but instead there were weapons scattered on the floor. The good part is that the only weapons available were the pump shotgun and dual barettas. and smoke grenades... lots of em.

The earliest map I remember making was an HL1 map that didn't really have a goal other than kill stuff and find your way around. It had horrible flashing textures and some walls made of liquid. I ended up junking it when it began crashing and I didn't realize it was the monster_furniture I added. This was in like... '00?

I lied. This is my first TF2 map: Grid (Arena)

Basically, the map consisted of 9 chambers that were dynamically separated by walls that change every 10 seconds.

My first map for a Valve game was in Half-Life 1. It was an office complex room full of office prefabs and two idle scientists next to each other (I tried to get them to do "ponder" animations and stuff and foolishly thought the field to show an animation in the editor was it). There was also a soda machine in the corner next to a Barney. You could break down a hidden wall to uncover some headcrabs and a gluon gun.

Yeah...pretty random. It was also really dark because I used the default all-too-natural yellowish light entity.

Icarus, thanks for making me feel bad. Your first map was a complex one, and I probably can't do that even after making a few practice maps.

So were my first maps. They were for Doom. :p

I made a couple maps for Quake that got played at a LAN party once. It wasn't until Red Alert, Dark Reign, and Starcraft that I really started pumping out maps that got played regularly by me and my friends.

With Quake 2, I finally started subjecting the masses to my creations, making maps for CTF, Rocket Arena, and Action Quake 2. My AQ2 maps, museum and kumanru, were the first ones that gained any amount of widespread popularity.
