Hi all,

this is my first map. It´s quite simple, nothing too fancy with only three control points. I made this thread so i have to finish at least this one.

Theme is still open, and i´m making custom textures for this one.

Here is overview and views from the start and the control points.

There are going to be buildings or something between the control points and spawn so there wont be that much open areas.


Later i will upload the pictures somewhere so you dont have to deal with attachments. Which free site is recommended? Imageshack? Photobucket? Flicker? I really dont know much about those.

Looks good...but what style? You sayed, that you use costum Textures, but what style?

I havent decided the theme yet... There are some ideas which im going to use for later maps, though it seems that many of those are used now on community maps. There is going to be some displacements, so maybe some rocks and cliffs etc.

But i just want to make some textures while im totally stuck with Hammer.

the shapes are more "interesting" than squares, but in the end it will make your map a sonuva gun to optimize. the odd angles that form the foundation of your map will cut up your areaportals in odd ways.
its usually best to have the basics of your map be on standard angles (which for hammer are more of ratio's... 1 unit down for every 2 units over, or 4 up to 1 over) then introduce wierd angles in the form of models, function details, or other entities which wont cut up your level.

Ill have to admit that i didnt thought the areaportals and they are quite a new thing to me. Have to start dealing with those now...

Is it okay for a smaller map to do less optimization if you get it running with decent fps? I know you should optimaze as much as possible but anyways.

Could you say that my map is small? Now the skybox is roughly 8000x15000 units
