I was trying to optimize like a good lil mapper so I was trying to put area portals and whatnot into dustribute. I was going to put them on the windows, but in the process of turning the area portals into func area portals, I noticed the func_areaportalwindow thingie...so I tried to use those...but this is what happened..

Any ideas/knowledge to share/suggestions?

This is most of what one should see...

but 2 steps to the right and you get:

elsewhere:
close to correct:

2 steps back:

Would that look the same if I had used area portals instead of area portal windows?

Read the VDC page on them... they aren't merely for holes that the theme dictates are 'windows', they perform specific functions, and are usually not something to use in multiplayer.

oh noes, not RTFM noob! :)

In case you're searching the forums and you can't be arsed to go RTFM:

An areaportal window can also be used seal structures in multiplayer, but are less useful because they can create gameplay imbalances in competitive multiplayer games. A player inside the structure that is near the areaportal window would be able to see any players outside, but players farther away outside would not be able to see the player inside.

I would stick with plain old area portals. Area portal windows are used in the similar manner like fade distance on static props: the further away you get, the more faded the object becomes--area portal windows cause the area behind the window to fade to grey/black and obscure the view the further from the window you get.

Now a plain old area portal with set state to open will work just as well or better, and you don't have to tie the entity to a door, contrary to the belief of mappers who know nothing about area portals.

Why your area portal windows are doing that, I have no idea, but I'm guessing for there's a leak. Check your compile log.
