are desert and farm themes overused in general, by desert, I mean like badlands, dustbowl. And for farm, I picture granary, and 2fort. I just think my map will look like another badlands or granary. Sorry for the question, I'm having a big theme issue with my map and I think this will decide if I throw it out or power through. I'm also a beginner mapper if that helps.

this thread is a bit pointless, badlands, badwater, hightower, fastlane, and dustbowl give me my answer.

another badlands or granary
That's a tall order, for a beginner especially. Maps should aspire to be as good at their themes as the classics, whatever the theme.
Anyway, my opinion is: not "overused" as much as "defining".

Usually I'd say desert and farm are not overused, they're poorly used.
When using those themes, most maps lack any artistic direction and mappers are happy with just copying/replicating the atmosphere and style of existing maps, along with their theme. That's when you fall in the "overused" trap. If you're not expending on the theme, it will look like yet an other desert map. Because of this, most tf2 themes are kind of underexplored if you ask me.
The challenge is reusing a theme while creating a unique visual identity.
