I'm new to to mapping and have played a few imps with the Steam group. One common comment I've seen is when maps aren't "on grid", which seems to refer to the dev textures not lining up with the lines provided (the 64x64 ones I assume). I've noticed that with my maps that I've been trying to design that this problem affects me too, and I have been unable to find a solution beyond manually adjusting the textures, which grows quite tedious. For what this looks like, this is basically what I mean:

Is there a way to generate blocks and simply make the brushwork apply to the grid automatically or am I stuck manually aligning it?

I think the problem is you have texture lock ( :texlock: ) turned on, which causes textures to retain their position on a brush face when moved or cloned. This is useful for keeping a texture aligned with that brush when you already aligned it (ie a computerwall texture aligned with the bottom of the brush), but this can be annoying when you need a texture to remain aligned with other brushes that aren't being moved.

To fix any brushes that you've already placed, select all your brushes/brush faces with dev textures (Tip: Replace Textures can be useful here), then set the Texture Shift X and Y values to 0 in the Hammer Face Edit dialog.

You're a lifesaver! Really quick though, which way should the "letters" of the grid be facing? I'm assuming for the sake of testing it looks better if they're all at least facing the same direction, so should i make it so they all face "up" so you can legibly read the letters?

If you're talking about the words facing the right way--that is, you want your walls looking like the left instead of the right in the image below--I frankly wouldn't worry about it. Nobody needs to be able to read that anyway, nobody's going to look at this texture and be like "what is this? I can't read it" or complain about the texture being backwards, and if you follow the steps I listed above, the lines on walls that are "backwards" should still line up with the lines on walls facing the right way.
