Preliminary voting is similar to how it has been in the past. Score as such:
  • Y if you like the map's layout
  • - if you have played the map and have a neutral or middling opinion
  • N if you do not like the map's layout
  • Leave your score blank if you have not played the map
Scores will be calculated as an average between Y, -, and N votes (counting as +1, 0, and -1 respectively). This means neutral votes are different from blank votes, so please be accurate.

You may not vote for your own map. Votes may be thrown our at the discretion of staff*. Contest judges are welcome to submit their votes here, but they will not count any more than anyone else's.

Explanations:
Axlebox:

Chin:
  • Very mazy
  • good gameplay space overall
Cliffside:
  • Great gameplay, good flanks
Dipper:

Escalation:
  • Minisentries are overbearing in the mid area
  • Last push area is very hard to push through, even long into overtime
  • General gameplay layout is good, just needs the cart to not have to be pushed right over the enemy spawn
Hot Garbage:
  • A fun idea executed with decent quality.
  • On the small side, and the mid-area has some problems with contesting the point, pack lack, and door cheese.
Illinois:

Shithole:
  • Double-layer gimmick executed very well
  • gameplay spaces are well balanced overall, fluid and dynamic combat
Tomb Town:

Waterlog:
  • The swapping points mechanic keeps the action from staling
  • Overall good use of pd
Chemplant (Stage 1 only):
  • Blue can rush high ground on A and cap very quick
  • Vertical variation is fun, but it is possible to have too much
Coyote:

Emil New Thing:
  • Parrot's tail clips through chair, literally unplayable

Fountain:

Red Mesa:
  • A few sentry spots with too much power
  • Overall good payload map

Route 51:
  • Okay payload map
  • high sentry spot on first shuts down attackers hard
  • Cramped near last
Tarpit:
  • Can't sit on the rake in the lake :(
  • first area is choky af, engineers have a really easy time holding nests
  • rest of the map is quite good
Tumb 2K19:
  • Good design, can definitely tell it was made for arena, not a converted KotH
  • Mid area's a bit too good for Soldier/Pyro

Axelbox: I generally found this map overly confusing and unfun. I never really understood the purpose of it having 3 points always activated for koth and 2 of them where the exact same layout. It's hard to figure out what to do when needing to defend or attack 3 different areas at once. None of the points are all that interesting to fight at either. Mid feels too open while the other 2 are awkward boxes on stilts.


Chin: The layout is super confusing and just not fun to play.

Cliffside: Probably the closest of all the maps I've played that I came to giving a neutral. A lot of it feels kinda flat and dull and I just didn't have a good time on this map. It's a no from me.

Dipper:

Escalation (Stage 2): This map has the problem that many plr maps do by not having the carts by each other all that often so there isn't a lot of play around them. Generally when one team pushes their cart a decent length, the other team can't get past it and end up just defending till they lose.

Hot Garbage: I can't tell if this map is a joke or not. All the jarate stuff everywhere is just odd. Mid has some really strong sentry spots and is overall way too difficult to retake once it's capped. Just didn't have fun on this one.

Illinois: Overall a pretty fun Koth map. The hole at mid doesn't overly impact general play to the point of being annoying, but is a fun little spot to fight around. There's a good use of routeing through mid with plenty of options for every class. Snipers can snipe, Scouts can run, and soldiers and demos can explosive jump. Only bad thing is that the building between spawn and mid has a tendency to be taken over by whoever has the point which makes it hard to get through it BUT, that doesn't happen often enough to be overly annoying.

Shithole: Fun map to rocket jump on but I really, really, really dislike the split point. The bottom room is just a deathbox due to it's small size and the upper area needs some cover. It's very annoying to be capping from the top area only for someone to start blocking the cap by sitting in a corner of the bottom area and generally unfun to deal with from what I played.

TombTown: Mid is very difficult to retake from my experience playing the map and I really dislike the death pit surrounding the point. It's too easy to accidentally fall into when just trying to get to it. The areas between spawn and mid are also too easy for the team with mid to hold and there was a good bit of spawncamping going on when I played it.

Waterlog: Really fun PD map. I was a bit worried that all the water would be unfun to deal with but for the most part it's a non issue. The main thing this map does well is stopping it's capture zones from being overly easy to defend so you don't end up with an engie building a level 3 by one and that's just game over.

Chemplant (Stage 1): From what I've played so far, red has a tendency to spawn camp blu right out the bat and it's really not fun to fight against. They get too much of an advantage around A and A is right by blu spawn. B also has a lack of useful routes for attacking making the overall stage feel like a slog.

Coyote: Trains aren't always fun. Having to hold the cart for the train at last can be a pain for attackers with how the layout is. Red generally has a bit too good of a hold on most of the map and C being on stilts comes off as kinda awkward and messy. I do see potential here but it's just not far enough along for me.

Emil New Thing: Pretty fun map for both attacking and defending. Plenty of routes to work with without going overboard and the beachside areas are nice. Each point has good defending positions as well as attacking positions to make it pretty even. The area with the tram is a bit...lackluster but that's the only negative I've got for it. Enjoyed playing spy on this map and I rarely enjoy playing spy.

Fountain: I think you did a great job with a hybrid payload game mode. The fact that instead of just capping a random point and the cart appearing, you're instead capping an elevator that's slowly raising with the cart on it helps to elevate confusion on what to actually do. The only area of the map that I don't like all that much is probably the areas around last. The cave by that forward spawn feels a bit messy and last can sorta roll from time to time but I see a lot of potential with this map so far.

Red Mesa: This map can have some rough chokes from time to time but overall I've enjoyed my time with it. There always feels like there's a way to deal with them if you can just coordinate your team correctly. Fun to attack and defend on.

Route 51: Pretty good use of routes for both teams. Detailing's a bit weird throughout but that's not what this contest is about. Overall, I like it.

Tarpit: Most of my dislike for this map is it's last point. That area just feels WAY too open and I never had any fun with any class going through there. A lot of the rest of the map kinda rolls for blu team from what I've played with the map so it's a no from me.

Tumb 2K19: Arena mode's already a bit of a hard sell and I don't think you did any favors for yourself by making it asymmetrical. The point area feels very messy and the stack of crates over a death pit are just...weird. Also easily accessible full ammo packs make engies annoying to deal with in arena. There's also that square of water at mid that's rather pointless.

My basic ass pros and cons below.

Axlebox:

PROS

-
Quite a few fun areas for DM with various different classes.

CONS

- Flawed gamemode that allows no comebacks.
- Easy to get to enemy spawns.
- Controlling mid almost always instantly wins you the game.

Chin:

PROS

- Fast paced, stalemates completely very rarely.
- "Easy to get in, hard to get out" style bases create many unique gameplay scenarios.

CONS

- Confusing spawn layout, easy to get lost when playing the map for first time.
- Health placement feels bit funky.
- Spaghetti.

Cliffside:

PROS.

- Rounds go by fast, there isn't much downtime.

CONS

- A lot of indoor areas and hallways.
- Random performance drops when looking towards the sea.
- People almost always all go to the cliffside, a lot of the other routes go unused.
- Very basic and uninteresting layout, nothing really interesting or fun ever happens.


Dipper: Crashes the server, technically disqualified.

Escalation:

PROS

- Fun to DM on, although I am hesitant to say all classes can have fun on this map.
- Train hazard that isn't totally obnoxious and out of place within the layout.

CONS

- A lot of weird sightlines and cramped spaces around mid.
- Stalemates heavily because of how long the map is.
- Too easy to backcap losing teams cart when they try to push because of length of the map.

Hot Garbage:

PROS

- Perfectly serviceable layout, all classes have something to play with here.
- Easy to learn and pick up, I instantly knew where to go within first few minutes on the map.
- Piss.

CONS

- Sniper is too good middle, like scary good.
- Balconies on the side offer way too safe of an area for snipers to control whole mid.
- Mid probably could be bit more interesting, but it is not absolutely terrible.
- Piss.

Illinois: It's alright, not good, not bad. Solid map when the rounds don't turn into spawn camp fests in the team lobbies because of the height difference and massive amount of health in the room.

PROS

- Fast paced and full of action.
- Hole creates an interesting dynamic when fights happen on the point.

CONS

- Unfortunately all of these only apply when winning team doesn't take over the enemy lobby.
- Far, far too much health and ammo in the lobby.
- Team holding the has all the high ground.
- Annoying side flank in the buildings next to mid allows enemies get to your side too easily.

Shithole: Dogshit, not worthy of any pros or cons.

Tomb Town:

PROS

- None.

CONS

- Flat, uninspired and boring layout.
- Weird death pit.
- Spells and skeletons.
- Flashing lights that hurt your eyes.

Waterlog:

PROS
- Fun to DM on.
- Jump pads create interesting gameplay scenarios.
- Lots of varying and fun height difference.

CONS

- Suffers from usual problems that stem from the gamemode, nothing the map can do about it.

Chemplant:

PROS

- Evangelion?

CONS

- A is impossible to hold.
- The upstairs area above A feels very split from the rest of the layout.
- Clipping exploits.
- Defending A is usually very difficult.
- Boring and uninteresting routes to B, it's just long curved hallways.
- Very awkward to hold B.

Coyote:

PROS

- C is unique and different, it's not perfect but has potential.
- There are some cool ideas here, the train being one.

CONS

- None of the said ideas are executed that well.
- Broken sentry spots on A.
- B is a coin toss, either the train fucks the defense over or blue never gets past it.
- Dropdown for red to blue flank is absolutely baffling, basically turns it into red flank.
- Mazy and confusing routing between B and C.
- Finale is a big spam grinder, once again RED has better use for the flanks than blue.
- Train gimmick for the final capture point, it should just come and hit the cart when capped.

Emilnewthing: It's solid, it has it's problems but nothing so major that I would vote No at this stage.

PROS

- Solid first point.
- Some interesting playspaces around A and connector between A and B.

CONS

- Good team can bottleneck blue to the starting point of their routes at B.
- A only has two sentry spots that are viable at all.
- B is not very fun for engineers.
- B is very flat and open.


Fountain:

PROS

- A lot of varied and fun areas to fight in.
- A and C are very fun to hold and fight
- Very good ammo and health placement, very easy to find.
- Complex yet at the same time easy to learn layout.

CONS

- B is usually a roll after a short hold.
- Last feels very awkward to hold, gets rolled often if there are no level 3 ready already.
- Broken sentry spot on A.

Red Mesa:

PROS

- None

CONS

- Lots of nasty sightlines.
- A lot of poorly designed chokes.
- Most of the flanks on A and B are more useful for red than they are for blue.
- Last is impossible to defend, blue has route to their spawn and highground.

Route 51:

PROS

- Cows?

CONS

- Massive easy to use flank on A allows attackers get all the way to B before A is ever capped.
- The corner after the ramp at A is a nasty choke that can be tough to get past of.
- Lots of fake death pits that fool me into dodging them.
- Flow feels like it is all over the place.
- Lots of weird routes around C.
- Last has route for blue to spawn camp red.

Tarpit:

PROS

- A is a lot of fun, it can be held but not forever.
- Area between B and last is interesting, unfortunately it rarely sees play.

CONS

- B is extremely unfun to attack.
- There needs to be a point between B and last.
- Nowhere to hold on last without it feelings akward.
- Total lack of metal on A is bit jarring.

Tumb2K19: I don't know really know what to put in my pros and cons here, it's okay, there isn't whole lot I can say about it.

can be fun at points but I also hate constantly running back and forth between the points. Teams never feel organised, they're spread across the entire layout and I dislike that
This map is spaghetti. Pog
I like the variety of gameplay spaces across the map, with the cliffside route against the windy side corridors. Some janky displacement work but I enjoyed it overall and people weren't funneled down 1 particular route too much (however pointside areas felt a little tight with all the cover there). I didn't feel like it had many 'pop out' gameplay spaces though, nothing caught my eye too much in the map's areas
it's neat, PLR isn't really my thing but this was fun. Rounds can take forever though, that final little nudge sometimes never comes (I feel like this is an issue on this more than other PLR maps, where it just never seems to end)
I enjoy this for the most part, however the point area feels iffy to me - I hate going on the too exposed lowground routes, sentries and heavies can camp the pointside windows or lowground flanks, and the point area feels annoying to play on because of how cramped some of the little paths are - most of my fun came from just skirmishing around the map after flanking
I don't know what I think of this map. It feels a bit weird to navigate, I dislike the flanks around mid, and I really dislike how the lobby is just 6 or so doorways funneling into a room. Should have tested this more
I love this, sentries on the containers suck (I blame ABP), the dual layered point is so much more interesting than other koth maps but I keep forgetting about the lower level + it feels really cramped and spammable down there
you had a mediocre koth layout that could have been improved easily over the contest's course, then you just detail it and chuck halloween content in with seemingly little thought...why???
great fun, I love the extreme height on A and the geometry around it. B has some really neat areas as well with the trench of sorts between the height and B. Snipers fee a bit strong sometimes
didn't enjoy earlier versions, had a blast on the most recent version though. The A-B connectors are nicer now (but it feels like blu can flank red a little too easily sometimes), and I also dislike the new leftmost B (blu side) flank staircase, but overall it feels cool
I really dislike A -> B, don't like B -> C much, don't like finale much either - the whole map just feels a bit weird to play. I do have fun sometimes though, especially in the opening area and opening -> A area. The A-B area either rolls or holds for ages
A is a blast but the routes into B don't feel particularly fun as blu, especially that single wide area you're funneled through before having to go a sharp left to get to half of the routes into B. I just do not enjoy B at all, A is cool though
I love this map, the CP start is neat + unique and the payload part is very solid also. My two main criticisms are that the B building is a bit cramped and A can be camped awfully by sentries
I'm sorry but to be brutally honestly the map is as plain as cornstarch. I can't remember anything in particular about the map, and so I can't remember what's changed in the 17 versions it's had. The flanks don't really feel thoughtfully placed, idk why they lead to some places and idk where red can possibly hold most of the time. The map isn't terrible, it's just not too memorable or great either. The choke at B is awful, blu has no flanks. The start -> A area sucks also imo. Red can't seem to hold anywhere else
the layout feels really messy, flanks that just bypassed the enemy team completely sometimes. The routes from red's first spawn to the cart start was almost a maze. There was a huge choke for the B area but blu also gets so much time to push. I did consistently have fun though, genuinely think this isn't bad
I think it's super neat, enjoy it way more than other arena maps. A little windy at points but I like how it's lots of little skirmishes centred around the point room once you get inside

I have edited all current ballots to change Escalation and Chemplant's names to show that only a specific stage is being judged. The BSP submitted for Chemplant is both stages; I am currently trying to find a workaround that will force the map to only play the first stage.
