I saw the suggestion for an ideas and suggestions forum, and I immediately had an idea for a map..and it's one I couldn't do on my own...

A TF2MAPS.NET community map!

Basically, the idea would be that several volunteer mappers from the community each do part of a map. Originally I thought each could have the map for a week and was to try not to break it...but maybe they could each do a section on their own and someone could slap it together at the end.

Thoughts?

Thing like this sound very fun in the beginning but it quickly loses it's charm once you realise the map is an unfixable mess of different thoughts and playstyles.

You will end up with one section of great vertical combat and another with 85% water. the flow of the map will probably be quite terrible too...

You can always try, but be prepared for the worst.

perhaps it'd work if said people got together before hand to discuss the style/theme of the map and work out what each mapper would like to put in the map?

planning things out and what not.

Yea that does sound pretty nifty!
Just have to make some outlines to go by.
Say something like this(for example):

  • 5cp map(to get more people involved)
  • 1cp per person(gets 5 people involved)
  • 1 person at the end to connect the areas(now 6 people are involved)
  • 1 person to do the lighting and soundscapes and textureing/skybox(that makes 7 people)

The theme wouldn't have to be decided until after all the parts were put together for the person who is textureing. But it might help the people making the area if they knew ahead of time.

Nice idea, You could also create a thread for things people who arent in the actual mapping process would want, ie the community chooses the theme and stuff so its not just the 7 or so people creating it and have input from everyone.

There was an idea in the past for a payload map where each person is given a set square to build on and a track that goes from the centre of one side and off another, any of the other 3 sides. (If you ever built a map for timesplitter's, just like that). These squares would be put together to complete a payload track.

I'm not sure whether that actually happened though. There was a lot of skepticism as to the do-ability of it.

P.S. @ BMP, if you want a good skybox that could go to a single person but one person wouldn't be able to texture the whole map.. that's where most of a mapper's efferts come to and the design process unfolds and details develop.

in order what u have to do with these maps is a person has to make a layout of the map and then cut it into sections... and then doorways and stuff will line up

Some people do layout and hammering, the community helps with brainstorming of ideas and contributes with models, textures, overlays, etc.

I've thought about this a few times (because there are a lot of community map threads here):

Something that will work as a community-map, but isn't really as fun, is this:

A multi level arena map, every one makes an arena and we link those like this map I'm working on right now :) :

http://forums.tf2maps.net/showthread.php?t=4795

But then with the levels selected at random ;)

All mappers will get an XxYxZ area to build their arena in.
(maybe add a huge Colosseum 3d skybox around it)
