I have a forest-type map and I'm wondering how to not make the end of the map not seem so obvious from high up. Do I need to make a 3d skybox or is it better to use skycards/ a matte card?
A combination of skycards and fog. No real world view is endless, so save yourself the effort of trying to make it seem that way and just use fog to make it seem endless in a realistic way.
Check out how the official maps do it.
It's worth noting that out-of-bounds areas often employ hills or cliffs with trees on them so that you can't see the horizon and by extension, where the trees end. I think skycards work best with hills anyway.
