today i opened hammer and it gave me that "hammer didnt shut down correctly" error thing. then i loaded the auto save of my map. now i have a completely empty vmf file, all brushes, entities, whatsoever is gone.. is there a fix for this or is everything actually gone?

You should look at the .VMX, which is found in the same folder as your VMF. As long as it hasn't been saved over, it should contain a backup of the VMF. To open it just rename it to <name>.VMF instead of <name>.VMX

What about in your Autosaves folder? There should be up to 3 backups, check the oldest or second oldest

Hammer's autosave feature can be a bit finicky. Sometimes it will try to give you an autosave file that you don't want and that was actually saved. Sometimes it will try to give you this file over and over again. If you know the file was saved before you last closed Hammer, you can pretty safely ignore this file, as it's just the autosave bugging out.

If DrSquishy's advice doesn't work, then the only option left would be to decompile the last compiled version of your map (if you have one). If you don't have a compiled version of your map, then you're probably SOL.
