Every time i press ctrl + N to create a new file an error always pops up saying "failed to load the default scheme file" when i press ok i dont have the basic viewing controls with the map. For the top and side view that which are supposed to have a grid it doesn't show which is making it difficult to start mapping.

Valve Developer Wiki has a section on this error I believe.

The short version is that you need certain files to use the shortcut. Do not quote me though, I never use that shortcut so I did not experience it.
