Help with displacements

I have made in hammer a 8 sided cylinder displacements and wanted to make the top side also a displacement but it wouldn't let me turn it into a displacement. what to do?

Displacements can only have 4 sides, no more, no less. If you wanted it as a displacement, you'd need to split the top face up into many smaller faces, each with 4 sides. I'd recommend against it though

Why would you recommend against it? It shouldn't be too hard; you can do it in as little as 3 displacements. As long as you're not approaching any engine limits and your displacement verts aren't too close together, you shouldn't have any problems.
