What do I do first?

Just starting all of this. I don't even know what to do first. How do I even make a room? I can't figure this out at all. I think if someone helps me with this first thing then I might be able to understand what I need to do to create things.

I can understand your confusion. Hammer is a complex tool, and it takes a while to get used to. In my opinion, the best way to get started is to follow this guide. It starts at the very beginning, explaining things step by step. It's written for HL2:DM, but almost everything is exactly the same as in TF2. Really helped me get going. =)

Yeah, that really is the best tutorial for you.

The rough part of learning to make a map is figuring hammer out, but once you get the hang of it, you'll likely start having a lot of fun and end up with a level-building addiction. Hammer's not impossible to figure out... Only a few weeks ago I knew nothing about Hammer, and now I've nearly completed a six-control-point Dustbowl-style map.

Plus, this community has a lot of nice, helpful people. Stick around here and be polite, and someone will usually have an answer.

Also, tutorials are strung out all over the net. You even can learn a lot from Counter Strike and Half Life 2 tutorials.

The guide linked above is your best bet.

Your second best bet is to join our Steam chat room. People are always willing to help tackle your problems with you. I'd even be willing to help, regardless of our quibble on whether Badlands is a tough map to learn :)

Welcome to mapping! It's a heck of a lot of fun.

I started just over a month ago, and am currently working on my first map that I intend to release (couple more months though).

I was in your position not long ago, and what really helped me was reading the SDK wiki (someone has already provided you a link), as well as picking up a copy of "Half Life 2 mods for Dummies". I've never bought a "dummies" book before, but this one really kick started my mapping technique. Most of the techniques can be used in TF2, however, some will be different.

Youtube has a number of video tutorials as well.

And of course, one of the best places to get advice is, well, right here! The people on these forums are so helpful and friendly - unlike most internet forums.

Good luck to you!

This sounds like you're trying to create a brush with the Block Tool (Shift-B), but not hitting the enter key after you get the box the size you want.

:) For what it's worth, I started knowing absolutely zero about mapping. Went through 'my first room' for DeathMatch, and moved on from there. It's a lot to learn, but pretty easy once you do.

so i finally made a repsawn(room is a little tall but its just a practice room so i dont care). i think i might of did it correctly. i have to go home today and try it later after the girlfriend leaves[they are always in the way of any work i do. like my car has been in pieces in my garage for two years now.] if the respawn room works then I think I am going to stat with making a map. just gotta think of what the map should be like.
