I only know the basics of lighting. The light entity doesn't seem to be effective unless I place a ton; this lighting doesn't look very good. Is there a better way for lighting?
Use light_environment for outdoor areas (you can find lighting values for different skies on Valve Developer Community). Lights can also have their "light" value increased. But I find they light decent sized areas fine, how big are your rooms?
