this map just feels so viscerally wrong.

Uploaded an updated BSP.

This version should be 100% completed and ready for release. Can you guys perhpas check it over for me and see if you can find any glaring issues that I may have over looked..

There is a nav file packed in already if you wanted to play with bots :)

Valve should swap these maps with originals for a week, just to make april fools a thing.

Back in 2010 when I first did these I emailed Robin Walker about just that.. at the time they were going to look at doing it with code but it never happened.

I kind of enjoy making them anyways, when I get to it at least. I'll be putting up mirrored Goldrush in the next few days hopefully..

They actually did some work towards that direction. There is tf_logic_on_holiday entity that has IsAprilFools selection to trigger stuff on such day as well setups for valentine, halloween, smismass, etc. But i think that is as far as they went.

Will you also be doing community maps?

That was never my intention. Ill only do official maps, but if there are community maps gone offifical then I'd want to get permission from the original mapper first..

Repacked the file with bsp_repak to reduce the size.
Reduced from 77mb to 27mb.

I'd appreciate it if some people would take the time to download and confirm if everything looks okay as there is custom content within the file.

Everything looks packed, nice work with the custom map photos by the way.

Thanks mate.. I actually took the care to take them from the same angles as those in pl_upward. The bottom one shows a staircase that I actually ended up making a mirrored model for in the final releases.

It would appear the Workshop changes the timestamps and such. I couldn't access a server with the same file I had uploaded and had to copy in the one I downloaded from the workshop.

Updating the download to avoid file mismatches if someone gets a copy from here.

Nothing relly new to see here.

Now I want to see what happens when we swap the map's gameplay direction and make it pl_downward

Several people have suggested this idea of 'Downward' being Upward but with swapped spawns. The entire map is worked around the journey to the end pit. You can't just move that to the entrance way of Blu spawn and expect it to work from a gameplay POV. It would likely end up looking like trash and playing like trash. It's a project that I wouldn't expect any mapper here to be interested in working on.

This may seem a little hypocritical of me considering the mapping that I have done and am doing with these maps but the concept of modyfing official maps and/or other peoples work is very much frowned upon.

When I first posted the mirrored maps here, I was half expecting to be run out of town even though I was careful to explain my position. I have always tried to be very clear that my goal with these maps is to keep them as close to their originals as possible. I believe mirroring makes something old new again and offers new perspecitves that perhaps provide some insights for players and mappers. I have tried to treat other peoples creative work with respect.

All that aside, I think a 'Downward' map that works in a downward spiral is a pretty cool concept and could be an interesting take on a payload map. But it needs to be a new map, not a modification of an official one.

I never said it would be a good map. That's why we have the April Fool's event.

Maybe add _final# to the end of the file name. having 3 called release will confuse things.

I respectfully disagree.. appending to the name is ugly. If you click the primary link here now you get the exact same file as you would get from the Steam Workshop. There technically is only one release version currently available for download. If a user were to download one of the previous versions from the Version History tab here then they can expect a mismatch with any server running the map, but I don't know why someone would be doing that. The version history is valid and I have explained why the download was changed each time, they stand as a history of development as they should being on this site.

The way I see/understand things is this site is for map development and not a respository of released maps. Users should technically only be sourcing released maps from the Workshop.

The problem comes when someone has already downloaded a previous version of your map. Perhaps, at the time, a past version was the most recent. In this case, anyone who downloaded the map over 20 days ago from here will get a version mismatch any time they attempt to join a server with the most recent version. Alternatively, a server running an older version of the map will also get version mismatches, and they might not even realize it because they can't easily tell what version they have. All for what? So the map name looks slightly prettier? Saying people should only download it from Steam is a poor excuse for a problem that can be so easily fixed by just renaming the file. We have these naming conventions for a reason. We're not Valve; we can't force everyone to download the same version of our map.

I hear you..

I uploaded the 'final' version here for testing first. Then that file was uploaded to the Workshop. The workshop then changes the file by chainging the timestamp. I think it actually runs a script against it, I've seen other maps reduce in size, so I think it actually does the bsp_repack if it hasnt been done, etc.

To avoid server-downloader mismatches, I then updated the downlad here to match the Workshop version.

I'd like to think that anyone using this site has the nous to delete a map from their maps folder and redownload if they ever had a mismatch when playing on a server.
