Events Maps File Names

Why do the file names have to be different from the map name shown in game? For example Eyeaduct ( Koth_viaduct_event ) why doesn't the map file name just be Koth_Eyeaduct? Ghost Town has its name as MvM_Ghost_Town. There is no _event at the end. So why doesn't all the other maps have to have the _event at the end. This can be very confusing for players who dont really use the create map button on the main menu/console. People would be looking for Helltower but they cant find a file name prl_Helltower. for another example is BrimeStone ( Pl_Fifthcurve_Event ). Nobody will ever think that BrimeStone would be name a completely different file name unless you are a mapper. This will confuse people who dont use create the sever button/console If i would have fix this i would do this.

Harvest Event ( Koth_HarvestEvent)
Mann Manor ( Cp_MannManor )
Eyeaduct ( Koth_Eyeaduct )
Ghost Fort ( Koth_GhostFort )
Ghost Town ( MvM_GhostTown )
Helltower (Prl_Helltower )
Carnival of Carnage ( Sd_CarnivalofCarnage )
Gorge Event ( Cp_GorgeEvent )
Hellstone ( Pl_Hellstone )
Moonshine Event ( Koth_MoonshineEvent )
Sinshine ( Cp_Sinshine )
Brimestone ( Pl_Brimestone )
Maple Ridge Event ( Koth_MapleRidgeEvent )
Pit of Death ( Pd_PitofDeath )

To my understanding (of how to read a Wikipedia page) Ghost Town used to be referred to internally as "coaltown_event" but because of how map and mission voting works in Boot Camp, it would be trying to find a population file labeled as the difficulty "Event" instead of finding the map, so it was changed to just "mvm_ghost_town". I guess the extra underscore can seem redundant but it's up to Valve really and I don't see a problem with it.

As for whether naming the maps to their event names would make it less confusing, I can't speak for any halloween mapper but I personally believe that naming a map "mapname_event" makes it easier to tell that the map is in fact a reskin and not an original map made from scratch for Halloween.

I think people who know how to use console won't be confused by a couple of map name differences. Just my opinion.

However you can just fit the mapname and then the event right next to the map name then it would say event so people will know its the event map. Also for the other maps like Brimetsone, people can just look at the wiki to see that is an event map of a another map.

Maps have event at the end to show they are event versions of existing maps in the game, if they have their own special name that's because it is it's own special map, like manor, pit of death, and community reskins that don't have their existing variants in the game. In the end it's up to the map author, and honestly your suggestion sounds more confusing because I don't have any idea what the base layout for "ghost town" or "ghost fort" are based off of the name.

Valve started the trend by adding _event to the end of their own halloween made maps. Community people like me followed that. Besides, Carnival of carnage sounds a lot better than sd_doomsday_event on loading screen. Also now that phi has both versions of cp_sunshine in the game, by your system there already would be conflicting name with the event and the normal one, with exception of 1 letter. Ending _event seems a lot better imo.

But if you want to go look a bit further, the map filenames have been a mix of different variations ever since community maps were added. There are maps that arent by gamemode_name. Some examples:

Payload map hoodoo isnt pl_hoodoo, it's pl_hoodoo_final
Control point map Gullywash isn't cp_gullywash, it's cp_gullywash_final1
Control point map Freight is names also cp_freight_final1
There are total of 14 maps ending with either _final or final1.

These maps are named as such, because valve added them at later stage when map name was already out there or it already had _final at the end when valve added that. This is to avoid map conflicting on players, even though valve maps can be updated with same filename.

koth_event_event

Anyway - if im correct valve hardcodes map names on their end so pl_badwater appears as "Badwater Basin" in the loading screen, and all the maps with _event and _final suffixes get different names.

Yeah, Valve realised during 2016 halloween that the community maps also need to have the same fix on loading screens and such as their own maps. Sadly this method is usable only by them, and we cannot use the same method for more complex map names (2 separate words).
