There is this map I have played, which i have noticed has a very impressive snow storm/blizzard effect. I know how to do the fog but how can I replicate the actual heavy snowfall? The map is dr_winterhill: http://gamebanana.com/maps/171819
IIRC, dr_winterhill uses a grid of env_smokestack parented to a func_tracktrain. It's an expensive way to do it, but the author gets away with it because the runners don't often see it up close.
Particle systems (like the pyro's flamethrower effect) will give you more control over effects but they have a steeper learning curve than just placing an emitter entity. Still, they allow you make more suitable effects that are less of a performance burden.
