Level design, especially for a game that utilizes the 3d space as effectively as tf2, requires that both you and the program you're using can operate in the 3d space.

I personally believe that hammer is as simple and user friendly as it can possibly be. That's not to say it can't be daunting at first, but if you put your nose to the grindstone you'll get a hang of it in no time.

ok, so i can open up the mapper but i dont know how to open the map i want to edit (2fort)
If you open a finished map, you'll notice loads of playerclip, hint, nodraw, blockbullets, areaportals, and a ton of other brushes that are carefully placed as a final touch on the finished map. If you go in looking to change any map geometry, you have to be prepared to edit a handful of other brushes too. That's why it's easier to start by making your own basic maps first, like Crash said.

Absolutely agree, have at least have one or two maps under your belt that utilize some of these features (which will be a long time, not gonna lie) before you tackle finished ones. A lot of finished map edits are made by inexperienced people and they end up poorly optimized, ugly, or something else. Trust me, you won't know what's going on and end up making it worse somehow.

But that isn't to say you shouldn't experiment- I strongly encourage it! Just try to grow some wisdom about the editor first.

Just gonna try and make it clear that if you think Hammer is too hard and aren't willing to put in the time to learn how to use it, you probably shouldn't be trying to make maps, even if they're just edits.
