So, recently i redid my map, Pumpstation, for the second time...
unlike the first time, I kept nothing of the old map except for the theme, and general concept...

But then I realized, the first version was tiny and wasnt even fun in 6s...
the second version was massive, and could EASILY have supported 24v24 matches... i know...
then my third revision was just a 5cp map stuck in the body of something smaller than koth... (you can go play the absurdness if you want...)

And I have decided to redo it Again... but my question is:
When has it gotten to to many revisions that you should just make a new map?
And is it a good Idea to do so many redos? or should I just stick with a layout, and work with it?

Some maps will go through many, and I mean many alpha versions to get to the point where it has a good, and fun layout. I will start a new map when I feel like I've learned enough that my skills exceed the design I have going for the map. At that point, the map is just holding me down from continuing to learn and improve my skills. For example, my map Borealis is more or less an extension of Isosceles. They are both payload maps, yet Isosceles was very linear, small, and felt very hallway-y. I started Borealis as a way to take the ideas that people considered good in Isosceles, and put them in a creation that represented my skill level. If you feel your map is just limiting you at this point, feel free to start a new one! Even though you may be on a new, empty vmf though youre just updating Pump Station, you can still feel limited and held down by the idea of "what the map should be/I've seen it before, now I gotta recreate it." Starting a whole new project, under a new name, and under new ideas will help you break free from the creative-barriers that working on an older project my hold.

Another example I have is a very old map of mine, Cp_Camp. It was a 3cp map, and I was updating it daily for about a week or so. 3cp as a gamemode was hard to work with, as there wasn't many successful maps with the gamemode, and it was still rather new at the time. Every test, I was told "it would be better as 5cp or koth." My new-mapper skills didn't help the situation either, as I was having trouble understand the flaws behind the map, and even more trouble figuring out the solution. I abandoned the map out of frustration, and began working on newer projects.

TL;DR sorta:
My point is that there is that there is no limit to how many alpha versions you may make for a map, and same goes for recreations of the map. Just know that constantly restarting a map may be limiting your creativity as you may have the thought in the back of your head that you want to map to resemble the old version, when maybe its best to just start anew. Your skills will have improved by the time you started the map, but sometimes the map doesn't grow with your skills. However, if you feel the map is improving, and its worth salvaging, keep working on by all means! Something that you don't expect may come out of it! If you feel the map can improve, but you want to start a new project, feel free to put it up for adoption, and maybe someone else can give the map a try.

Holy shit... I've never thought of it that way... I don't really want to put it up for adoption, but then, I don't really feel like i should continue it... and the way you put it, how its actually hindering my limiting me, I do agree with that whole heartedly... I think i may wait to abandon it just yet, but i will be starting a new project...
