Hi, I'm new to the forums, and working on my first map with the hammer editor.
I started playing tf2 a few months ago, and started messing around with hammer one or two months ago.

I am not a complete noob at mapping, since before TF2 I played ET and made maps for that with that editor (gtk radiant). So far I can tell you the hammer editor is a dream compared to gtk. I left massive holes in my skybox, just to do quick tests and the compiler didn't freak out I was like wow. :woot:

Now to get to my "problem" I was finishing up on a map, its a night time themed orange map.
Your probably thinking omg, not another orange map, but it's my first give me a break lol.
Anyway the "night-time" is the problem. The shadows look pretty bad, but that just needs tweaking with nice lights (but if you guys know something better I'm all eyes :)).

But the main problem is the skybox. At the moment I was using sky_borealis01, but (no offence to the devs), it looks pretty rubbish in TF2. Before that I used sky_night_01, but at the edges it has pink lines? like the sides or the bottom is missing or something? So that looks pretty ugly when you're looking down from the tower.
So I was wondering is there a nice skybox for TF2? or is there a fix for those pink stripes somewhere?
I've been searching with google quite alot, but to no success, and I also did a quick search on this forum, but didn't find anything that looked interesting. (did find the major sticky thread with all the links though, looks interesting will definately check a few of those out)

Anyway, I hope you guys can help me out with the skybox, thanks!

For the interested some screenshots of the map (I'm quite a bit further now, but I don't have any newer screenshots):

These were with the night skybox for tf2 from valve (before I started using borealis) you can see the stripes I am talking about on some of the shots.

*sigh*

Orange maps killed DoDS, which was very upsetting. I will try to set that aside for a minute and help you.

I made a map that was dusk (early morning). I used sky_day_01 (I think it was) and set the env_light settings really low. If the env_light settings are low, you can use any sky really. Goldrush sky might work out good.

*edit: You might need to buildcubemaps to get rid of the pink/purple lines, look it up on the source sdk docs.

Here's a screenshot of how mine turned out.

hmm buildcubemaps has something to do with reflective surfaces I think, so I don't think it wouldn't be that.

I've never played DoDS, so I can't really relate.

I'll try that sky then.

What skybox do they use on lazytown nite time? anybody know?

Nearly all of valve's skyboxes have an unfinished bottom half because valve never needed to have that part seen, and thus the bottom half ends up rendering ugly. The alpine sky in TF2 is the only one that has a lower part, since it's visible in lumberyard, dustbowl's and sky_tf2_04 work because they are plain gradients and get smeared across the bottom as an even color. None of those are dark for your use, however.

I like the craziness in those screens, even if its an orange map.

I'll just go with sky_day_01_09, it's not great, but it is simple, so i don't think anybody will really notice it hehe.
Thanks for the help guys.

Do you have a WIP thread on your map? I'm interested in it... looks cool. Maybe a quick beta video demonstration? ;D
