so, recently, I transitioned my map from ctf into 5cp... in the following imp, I received this feedback:

Aren't ctf maps designed to be small? I thought they were one of the smaller map types, and that 5cp was the second BIGGEST map type... so then... why was I told to downscale a map when transferring to 5cp? it thouroughly confuses me, and I woul love to know why this feedback was given to me...

This looks like it might have been a mistake? It'd probably be best to go after the person who left the feedback if it doesn't make sense to you, or you could just ignore it - it's your call.

It would be best to directly message the person who left the feedback. You can click their name on the feedback page and it will take you to their steam profile page.

If anything though the person probably made a leap of logic and thought that the flaw was due to your change in gamemode. I haven't played your map in a few versions (so I don't know how it is scaled currently), but it was pretty overscaled in some areas then. This person probably just felt it was overscaled.

After playing your map yesterday, changing it to 5cp made the normally VERY over scaled map seem just... over scaled. No offense, of course! I mean it constructively.

In a general case, 5cp maps should be bigger than CTF maps. Much bigger. In your case specifically I don't think you had to add much to accommodate it for 5cp- it was already big. I think that's what the feedback is trying to say. I don't know. He was weird that playtest.

I'd rather say what you say about big gamemodes and small ones is pretty wrong. 5cp and CTF aren't really different in size, and if you didn't know, badlands is a port of a CTF map from TFC.

CTF usually has 3 combat zones, mid and each Intel room. 5cp has 5 zones, being each control point. This makes 5cp maps considerably larger. Powerhouse is a good example of a cp map that is about the size of turbine-ish, and you would notice that because it's the size of a CTF map is has only 3 points, meaning 3 combat zones: Mid and each last.

If you played that one imp not too long ago, someone made a 5cp version of powerhouse. It was much too small, and created more problems than it solved.

I know I'm simplifying things, and that some combat is supposed to take place everywhere but spawn, but my point still stands.

As for comparing tf2 design to tfc design, it's pretty different. Badlands would be too large for a CTF map nowadays, maybe not back then, but things change.

This isn't really right. 5cp meta includes lobbies, and connectors often unite and form areas as well. CTF also has enough buffer zones to not consider the maps to boil down to 3 spaces.
And not that combat can happen anywhere, these are almost as important areas as points themselves.

Now I want to see ctf_badlands with the intel on spire and spawns in lobby...

That actually sounds like a fun layout, maybe I'll try my hand at it sometime.

Hence why I said I was simplifying things. Even then, ctf maps have less of those, so they are smaller.
