So... I have 2 questions that have to do with a potential asset pack... Something like frontline...

So, I have an amazing idea for a potential community update, but I have hit a small roadblock...

1) I can't model... I was wondering if someone could tell me where I could learn to model, as I would love to be able to do more contributions than just making a map or two, and heading the project...

2) I would like to get a group of people together to make this a group project, so I'm not making an entire asset pack, sfm, and other stuff, all on my own... would anyone like to help me out? The main idea of the project will be in flux, but the general idea is featured above: a Tropical Getaway...

Creating an asset pack is a huge undertaking that I would not recommend attempting without several years of experience and a lot of good connections with people who can help you. People probably won't make models for your project unless they believe it will be worth their time, and that's a hard sell even if you have an established reputation. Almost (if not every) asset pack for TF2 was created by people who had already known each other for years prior and had a good amount of modeling experience.

I don't recommend trying something this ambitious. Start with trying to finish a single map in the theme, and see if you can't put some of your own original models in the artpass. A complete asset pack is almost certainly outside of your skill, but a single map with a few pieces of original content to help sell the theme? Perfectly achievable.

(Tip: A lot of new themes can be created with existing content. Yukon was created by coloring an existing dirt texture grey!)

So new players shouldnt try to get community attention towards potential new content packs unless youve already done it?
That sounds like a circle jerk of elites for a video game.
"Dont do it if you havent done it before"
It's more about proving you have some experience and aren't wasting everyone's time. It's easy to talk but difficult to build relationships and a reputation. The best way to make people listen is to have experience and a portfolio to back up your claims.

In this instance, SmallBuiscuit hasn't finished a single map and only has one project to his name. It's not about having done something before but more about backing up your ideas.

Someone like Crash with the frontline pack, he's had multiple finished projects that prove he knows how to map and is serious about it. Someone who's yet to receive those credentials will be a tough sell.

Exactly. I'd also like to add that I think people jump to the idea of content packs pretty quickly when they don't really need to. If the idea of a tropical getaway really appeals to you, making a single map with the idea (and some custom content to make it work) is a million times more feasible than trying to produce a complete content pack.

It's also what the people currently managing content packs have been doing already for years, more or less.

Well if that's the case, I wouldn't mind helping making assets for a map like that, I've always wanted to do something like that. :D
