So... I've seen this idea floating around, but I decided to do something about it!

What if, someone took an old abandoned map, (particularly not even in A1 yet) and put out the download for everyone and made it a contest?

Basically, who in this community can take an unfinished map, and make it great?

But this got me thinking, this leaves almost no room for creativity... The theme is already decided, the gamemode is set in stone, this would be terrible...

And then I had a brilliant idea... Instead of taking someones old map, how about we make a new one?

This is where I introduce you to "mp_orphaned" It's a map still in development, but it's sole purpose is to be terrible, with so many gameplay issues, its almost unreal! There won't even be any logic in it for the final release... (except respawn logic...)

Now, I'm not gonna just put up a few brushes, throw some props in, and call it a day, no, this is perfected madness... It's gonna be just the right amount of... well... right to be able to make something out of it!

Now, this project WILL take a while, as it will be going through multiple iterations before I can safely say: This is perfect garbage. So then, why do I bring this to you so early on in development?

Well, I have 2 questions:
1: It would be great if I could have this challenge be backed by the staff, and maybe even make this an official challenge...
2: I want to know what all you would like to see in the map? Because I can't really make "Perfect Garbage" solo...

In the meantime however, I will be making my garbage... see y'all later!

Sometimes working on a map's layout might mean ripping out an entire section and redoing it from scratch, and you can do that enough times to end up with a map that's completely unrecognizable from the original. Presumably this contest would require some sort of limit on how much of the map can be changed so that people can't just submit whatever they want and say that it's based on the original. I have no idea how that sort of rule would be enforced fairly.

The idea of having a source .vmf is one that's been tried a few times in the past, like with the Artpass Contest or BATT. These both work on the idea that the source material remains the same, which makes it easy to keep fair. Maybe instead of trying to work with an entire map of garbage, maybe the contest is about trying to integrate one or two strange buildings into a map?

HMMMM... can you rephrase this section? I don't quite think I understand...

Instead of providing a .vmf of a complete map, the .vmf would just contain a few small pieces of layout (for example, buildings that players fight in), and the mappers have to decide where to place those buildings in their map.

Also, I just read those two contests, and the BATT was almost 6 years ago... and that seems like it was a great contest! Could you possibly do that again, like what you did with assym boogaloo?

The current contest (Asymmetry 2) was almost a BATT contest, but we decided that Asymmetry would be better. When we plan for another contest, it'll probably be at the top of our list (but no promises!).

Ooh! I really like that idea a lot more!!!

I'm SO excited!

I was actually thinking recently that it might be fun to do a non-Halloween artpass contest on pd_pit_of_death (with Roll's permission, of course). Because I think it's a pretty fun map, but sadly it's only on servers at Halloween.
