Hey, I'm currently redoing one of my existing maps completely, and I have 2 questions.
1.How do I make 3D skyboxes like valve uses in their maps?
2.How do I make displacements? everytime I do it, it just gives me a leak or it doesnt even compile.

Thanks!

1. This handy tutorial helped me a lot when trying to make mine.
2. Here's a relatively short youtube tutorial for displacements. Your map is probably leaking because displacements alone can't seal a map; you need to have world brushes behind them. If your map doesn't compile, it might be because you have a non-rendered texture on your displacement. They should always have a texture that you can see in-game.

This is a list of a ton of skyboxes from various official valve maps.

I think this is what he was talking about? because, If he was talking about those types of skyboxes, there pretty hard, and judging by the first map, he doesnt have much experience. not enough to, (In my opinion) use those types of skyboxes... hell, i dont even use those things, and im... not... really... the... best... at... you know what? you get the point...

Those are 2D skyboxes. 3D skyboxes are the projected illusions outside map bounds that make maps look bigger than they are.

This...is a pretty unfair assumption to make of someone. A new mapper could definitely learn 3D skyboxes if they're committed enough and have the right guidance. Instead of doubting others, why don't you help them as best you can?

no... what you were posting a thread about was making land and other area inside of the 3d skybox. what i was talking about was a sky that seemingly goes on forever...
That is the actual technical definition of a 3D skybox.

Eh, thanks for helping guys but I don't think I wanna try mapping anymore, its really time consuming and I usually RARELY make anything good or worth while, but thanks guys.

I had that thought originally... I recommend sticking with it. maybe, (If your dream is like mine, and it hasn't been shattered yet) you'll be among the big guys. like CRASH, frozen, and even killohurtz up there. if you keep at it, nothing can stop you. stick with it lol... don't abandon ship before you've even gotten a small taste of mapping.

I don't usually stay with something for long, if it isn't good first few times I just give up, only on like virtual stuff though, but I don't know man, I've removed my crate factory map already, i was beggining a v3 to crate factory which I was just gonna redo the entire thing with more routes and scenery, but i don't have basically a drop of motivation to do it at this point.

Well I don't usually think positive so I dont usually stay with something for long, if it isn't good first few times I just give up, only on like virtual stuff though, but I don't know man, I've removed my cratefactory map already, i was beggining a v3 to crate factory which I was just gonna redo the entire thing with more routes and scenery, but i don't basically a drop of motivation to do it at this point.
That mindset wont get you anywhere. drop the mindset, and start thinking positively. this is mapping were talking about here. it takes hours to get good (Well, much more) and if you stop before your first map is even close to a decent map, you aren't doing anything.

"Whelp, thats three hours of my life wasted (More like 4 years of life... amiright?)" but maybe it isn't wasted. get out there, and make a map. dont make that time wasted.

Ive also heard that people work best under deadlines... i give you till the end of the week to make a functioning A1 map.

GO!

Mapping's not for everyone; it demands a lot of time and commitment that not everyone can provide. If he gave it a shot and decided it wasn't for him, that's perfectly fine.
