How does one get "veteran" status?

I was wondering how does one achieve such status? Is it messages posted? Money donated? Being admins good friend? How is this determined? Can't be because of years spent here?

When you reach 300 positive ratings, you get veteran status.

I was wondering this because i've seen people who have been on the site over a year or less than 2 years and they got that. Thanks for clarification.

I understand it cannot be account age alone, because everyone would be a veteran at some point.
