Yep. Hammer just crashes without a trace and I lose my map design forever. Sighs and cries

Do you have any of these things?
  • Enabled autosaves
  • A compiled version of your map
  • a .vmx file (in the same folder as your .vmf)
You may be able to recover your work if so.

Sadly I did not have any of those, but what vmx files.

.vmx is a sort of backup file automatically created whenever you save your .vmf. If you change the extension to .vmf, you can open it, and if you're lucky it might contain the last working version of your map.

Since hammer is decades old, it's prone to crashing after doing just about anything. Your best bet is to save very often.

Just get two of those head bobbing birds; put one over your Ctrl key and the other over your S key. Problem solved.

Alternatively, whack Ctrl+S after every single thing you do in Hammer, like it's some sort of ritual. That's what I do.

Unfortunately, I once had hammer crash while saving the file. Overwrote the map files with 0s. I was able to recover by decompiling the map, but it was still pretty inconvenient.

This is why i save changes after a period into a different file. So i have map like pl_something_01 to 022. I can go back and get something back. There is no point of saving always to a same filename.

Have you actually checked C:\HammerAutosave? Auto backup is enabled by default and saves a copy every fifteen minutes. You can open these files using Hammer's File > Open command.

When you open Hammer after a crash it normally asks you if you want to continue working on your map(s) from these auto saves.
